THE SCOUT LAW' Just what words do you use to- describe the desirable characteristics of your friend? Is he Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent! Is there a single one of these attributes which we dare consider as being in the least derogatory! There is not. Now let us consider the details of how, “A Boy Scout is Trustworthy.” A Scout’s honor is to be trusted. If he were to violate his honor by telling a lie, or by cheating, or by not doing exactly a given task, when trusted on his honor, he may be directed to hand over his Scout Badge. That is the first law in its completeness. “A man’s word is as good as his bond” has been a remark of recommendation for a long time. Honor is something we possess in degrees or else in some persons it is- conspicuous by its absence. A Scout must possess it or he isn’t a’ Scout and the penalty is plain; to hand over his Scout badge. To whom! To whomsoever has a right to demand it as a victim of the boy’s breach of conduct. Point 2. A Spout is Loyal. He is loyal to all to whom loyalty is due, his Scout leader, his home, and parents and country. What boy doesn’t do these things! Usually not many. In fact boys are mere loyal to their homes than their grown up fathers and mothers. It is only in the continued practice of this law that boys grow up into the type of citizen which we all admire. Point 3. A Scout is Helpful. He must be prepared at any time to save life, help injured persons, and share the home duties. He must do at least one “Good Turn” to somebody every day. Point 4. A Scout is Friendly. He is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout. Point 5. A Scout is Courteous. He is polite to all, especially to women, children, old people and the weak and helpless. He must not take pgy for being helpful or courteous. ( Points 3 and 4 cannot be amplified. They are brief and not misunderstandable. Politeness is the attribute of the salesman, the doctor, the nurse; in fact, anyone who meets with his fellowman and makes a favorable impression is polite, especially as a Scout. Point 6. A Scout is Kind. He is a friend to animals. He will not kill nor hurt any living creature needlessly, but will strive to save and protect all harmless life. Animals are peculiar in their senses. No person who is really sincere can deceive the dog by his treatment and get by. The elephant is said never to forget. Hence we can judge fellow-humans by the way. animals react to them. What better can a boy do than get his pet’s best recommendations for by it the whole world knows that boy. (Continued Next Week)
