SCOUTING: MENTAL, MORAL, PHYSICAL Scouting is just that: mental, moral and physical training tor the young Americans, 1940 models. If we look into Holy Writ, we find some pictures of Jesus as a youth. The story is known to all and we, therefore, use only the last verse as a foundation for this editorial: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” Physical exercise trains muscles to do work, to play games, to be part of the gang, to grow from the tiny infant held in the mother’s arms to the leadership of his group for good or evil. Mental exercise stimulates a wee tot to do, with the brain, tasks which the physical giant can not, by strength of muscle alone, accomplish. Moral growth must accompany these. That still smail voice which is to human beings what the .. balance wheel is to the watch, and the governor isi to steam engine, is the guide to that mentaT genius who directs the physical giant to do his work. Scouts have need for all these growth types. That boy who gets a merit badge in swimming, life-saving, or athletics, is physically well-trained. More than that, he learns when to do the proper thing, a mental training. Still more, lifesaving concerns his fellowmen and, therefore, a moral obligation is involved. Parents of boys or girls may plan so to order 4heir children’s lives aS to include all these phases of development. Many do; others leave this to social agencies. Any parent who chooses to place the child in scouting would do well to see that his boy or girl pursues a rounded course intended to develop all three phases. Someone will say, “What of religious training?” The twelfth Scout law is: “A Scout is reverent. He is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion.” Parents choose their own type of religious training. They will find in scout troops places for their children, be they Protestant, Catholic, Jewish or of other faiths. By this law, Scouts are able to agree. There is, however, in scout life a certain training which causes a boy to appreciate nature and, in that way, to develop a simple faith in the Father of the universe. (Next week: The Good Turn.)

To All Voters of The Town of Speedway It has been an honor and a privilege to have had a part in the government of the Town of Speedway during the past four years. Appreciating the fact that it was through the confidence placed in me and the efforts of a majority of the people that I was elected to the office of Clerk-Treasurer, I have made every effort to carry on the business of the office in an efficient and creditable manner. I leave the decision of my success in the hands of the citizens of Speedway and those with whom I have been associated during my term in office. Due td developments now in progress, the next four years will bring many changes in all phases of the Town’s business. The duties of the ClerkTreasurer include the proper recording of the Town’s affairs, especially the disposition of all cash funds, and the preparation of tax budgets. Since experience is the best teacher, it is obvious that the official who has had the advantage of a term of four years in the office is better qualified to meet the demands that will come during the next term. , It is the duty of every citizen to go to the polls and vote for the candidate who in the opinion of the voter is the better qualified for the office. Personal feeling notwithstanding, the welfare of the Town as a whole should be the dominating factor in the choice of candidates. Your support in the coming election will be appreciated, and if it is the desire of the citizens of Speedway that I continue in office, I assure you that I will carry on the best of my ability and experience.
