WHAT MAKES SCOUTING 1 EFFECTIVE FOR BOYS Boys, that is, normal boys, are as curious as they are hungry. Occasionally a boy is fastidious in his eats, but most often fillin’. They appreciate good food but it is surprising the assortment of materials that enters a boy’s stomach without too much of a kick-back. Likewise the array of things that passes over the theshold of a boy’s thinking is appalling, or would be to his Mother if she could view it. Many mothers do see a great deal of this array. Others leave it to their sons to choose, and, like the hungry boy who looks for E-A-T-S, some boys hunt for T-H-R-I-L-L-S. The question in hand has not been answered yet, but it concerns these boys; sons of mothers and Fathers. Any parents who knows enough about the things a boy does to ask intelligent questions of Sonny about these things is showing an interest in his activities. What tests have you passed this week? What did Bill say about your signaling practice! When will you take the 14 mike hike! Did you ask Dad to take you out on your map making hike! What Handicraft test will you pass if you put up the window shade for me! Questions such as these show an interest in your son’s Scouting progress. A continued checkup soon brings a boy’s confidence and Mother views a lot of the panorama of a boy’s mind. Where does Dad figure in. Only by digging into the pages of Sonny’s Scout Manual and uncovering a bit of undiscovered territory which a certain “big boy” and his “little boy” may explore in common. Mystery is always good for arousing a boy’s interest. Remember Jfaat magician. Explose mysteries together; be interested in what your boy does naturally and lead the way. It is always easier to take a boy any place than it is to send him. (Next Week—Scouting, Mental, Moral, and Physical.)
