Thamas Taggert was re-elected mayor «rs L®dianapolis by the Democrats last 'ieaHday' in the face of a most determined •opposition. It was a most gratifying vicitory for Taggert and his party will place popular gentleman in the way ofatfadmug higher things in political affairs. Peter E. Studebaker, a member of the ^xdebaker Bros.’ manufacturing comg»any, of South Bend, died at the sani«arium at Alma, Mich., last Saturday after an illness of several days of heart Viable. The death of so prominent and wseful a man as Mr. Studebaker creates a vacancy in the world that is hard to till. His death is an irreparable loss to JSouth Bend. Wherever postal savings banks are i;a operation, says the Chicago Record, women are among the most appreciative patrons of the system. As a rule ■women are more careful of small sums tihan men, and seem to have a more practical realization of the value of such accumulations. 'Governor Tanner, of Illinois, has been title special target for the sarcasm of the «Chieago papers for some time. They Slave been roasting the governor to a 4>rown turn, but the worm has finally burned. Tanner has now commenced to roast these fault-finding papers and among other things charges them with stisincerity and corruption. He says ’“the trust newspapers will give their in&uence for a consideration.” The death of Captain J. B. White, of Fort Wayne, which occurred last Satur«day, is a distinct and srorthern Indiana. Captain White was the architect of his own fortunes, and he •did a good job of it. He came to this country from Scotland a poor boy and when Ae died was worth about a half million ♦dollars, which he earned by good judgement and honest, intelligent effort. He was a member of congress from the Fort Wayne district from 1886 to 1888. likh patriots have been twisting the British lion's tail. At the national convention of the Irish Independent League lield at Dublin recently there were about 800 enthusiastic delegates present who, it is said, cheered heartily every utterance made against the English rule. William Redmond, one of the prominent speakers, gave the tail a twist which must have made the old lion wince. He said:

The yellow fever continues to terrify I New Orleans. Several cases have devel- I oped there within the last few days. The coming of frost, which is the only hope of checking the epidemic effectually is looked forward to with anxiety. William Holdemail, the treasurer of Elkhart county who is at present under , a cloud, being charged with a shortage of some 819,(XX), has turned the affairs of , the office over to his successor, who was elected by the county commissioners, pending an investigation of the books. Mr. Holdeman, it is said, could not be re instated, even though the affairs of the office should be found straight, as his successor has been duly elected which is a final disposition of Mr. Holdeman’s claims to the position. The Peru Republican says: “Never in the history of oil development has the record of the Peru field for the large number of producers and few dry holes been equaled. Twenty-eight producing wells were completed up to Wednesday and only two failures have been recorded. The old wells which have been pumped for sixty days, show no eigne of giving out and some of the wells drilled in this week have turned out splendidly, one of them being pronounced the best oil well in Indiana.
