James Wringer, of near Hamlet, is v'siting with relatives in this place. E. E. Byan went to South Bend Tues day on business. Miss Emma Kyan returned to Chicago : Saturday. Swift A Co. have their ice harvested at Fish Lake; one set of houses is only half full. There were over 400 employed. Whiz. ISLAND Last Sunday was the first day of sun shine this month. John Heath, Jr., is home on a visit. Little Erniee Weller, who has been on the sick list the past ten days, is improv ing. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. McCarty and \ al i entitle Hardy are all reported on the ' i sick list. ! Geo. Hummer and wife, of Maple Grove, visited with relatives on the Is 1 land Saturday and Sunday last. Willard Place drove over to LaPorte । last Sunday on special business. Peter Manlove, of Donaldson, was on I the Island last Sunday visiting with Mr. and Mrs. James Carey. About six inches of snow fell last Sun j day night but the ground was too soft for good sleighing. A valentine party was held at Wm. Stickley’s last Saturday night. There was a nice crowd present and all enjoyed themselves.
Miss Louisa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. । John C. Wolff, was the recipient of a ' lady's fine gold watch for a valentine. Milt Steele, her half brother, who is in ! Kansas, was the donor. The Kankakee drainage question is be ing thoroughly discussed through the I columns of the Independent by able j writers on both sides, but don’t think ; the marshes will all be corn and wheat fields when this work is done. On Wednesday evening of last week an old fashioned sleighing party went \ from this locality to Pierceton school house to church. The sermon was well delivered and appreciated by all. A. F. Baird is prepared to make calls in winter ns well as summer, for he is ■ owner of a new sleigh. The exhibition at • tregon last Saturday evening was one of the best ever given in Oregon township. Ev on body enjoyed a good laugh, also received some good advice. Messrs. W. S. Anderson and Ed. and Charles Lampson were the guests of W. H. and J. I*. Dipert last Sunday. O. 11.
