Aeeordiqgto the figures of a prominent statistician the census of 1920 will give the Jeading cities of the world the foUcwiug populations: Creator London, 82*16,256; Greater New York, 6,181,250; Paris, 3,234,063; Berlin, 3,496,729; Chi8,208,000: Philadelphia, 1,500,495. An Indianapolis minister, who knows what he is talking about, says: “What ■we want is lees money and more man hewlin our politics, more morality and commerce in our legislatures, more integrity and less strategy in our statesmanship, more of the spirit of the tern spenser.” We warn our sons with loud voices sgainst the dangers of the wine cup and Hie gambling table, but tax* many of us eit silent while our daughters contract habits of malicious speaking and envious CMtieism which are quite as great evils
in society as intemperance or gambling. —E. W. Wilcox. A definite and well organized lx*>m has been inaugurated in behalf of Secretary of State Griffin for governor bydhis republican friends. He seems to be quite .popular with a large wing of thoparty, and his candidacy is being warmly endorsed by a large number of republican papers throughout the state, i According to figures obtained by a Near York paper from all parts of the i Union McKinley can not be nominated on the first ballot at the St. Louis convention. There are prospects of an in tereeting struggle in the convention, and there is reason to believe that the chances are good for some dark horse to carry off the plum. The sentiment for Hon. B. F. Shively for governor does not seem to be waning in the least. There are hosts of democrats in the northern part of the state vdi© -would like to see Shively head their state ticket. Quite frequently favorable mention of his name in connection with this office can be seen in some of the influential democratic papers. Shively would make a vigorous campaign. His well-known oratorical powers would stand him in good stead and be a great drawing card in a canvas of the state. 'England has signified her intention of recognizing the belligerency of the Cuban insurgents, and also to sustain Uncle Sam in whatever position he may take in behalf of the Cubans. This will "lessen the possibility of war between the United States and Spain, which at all times h;is been remote, and tend to hasten the cause of Cuban independence, as well as lend stability to the business interests of this country, which have been more or less disturbed by the talk of war. A madman by the name of Rottman leaped upon the stage of the Auditorium in Chicago Monday evening and commanded Jean De Reszke, who was singins’in grand opera. to stop. The man was promptly taken care of, else another terrible assassination might have occurred to horrify the world. Rottman is-one of those crazy theorists who imagine that they are to be sacrificed by law .for some great cause. He is of the stamp-of Prendergast and Guiteau, and is a .very dangerous character. The police consider the capture to be very fortunate and timely. Walter Grant Dygert, an American ffrem Greenwood, 111., has been arrested by Spanish authorities in Cuba and is row held a prisoner by General Weyler. Dygert’s movements have aroused the suspicions of the Spaniards and Gen. V, eyier regards the circumstances as warranting an investigation before releasing Dygert. It is said that the prisoner is being well treated. The slate department at Washington has been notified of the circumstance. The . A.. niards have been shooting their piiEoners, and should it develop that i ” gert is in league with the insurgents hit chances of getting out of the dilemma i ew U probably ba very slim.
The securing of a factory at North Judson which is to employ about 150 hands shows what an advantage a well : organized improvement association is to a town. Through the efforts of its association North Judson secured this enter prise, the material for which is already being delivered on the ground to com mence building. The factory comes from St. Louis. A magazine writer says that Cripple Creek got its name from a trio of pros pectors who happened to stop on the banks of the stream because their mu e had gone lame. They discovered signs of gold, and decided to stay awhile. While putting up a shanty one of the men fell from the roof and struck on a dog they had with them, breaking his own arm and the leg of the canine. This made three cripples in camp hence the name.- Ex. Speaking of Lieutenant-Governor Nye’s condition the LaPorte Argus says: “Much of the talk about Gov. Nye’s sickness is greatly overdrawn. He is doing business all the time and looks about
■ as well as he ever did, but he is not feeling entirely vigorous, and is run down some in flesh, probably by overwork. He fears kidney trouble but there is nothing to indicate Bright’s disease as has been reported. He may have diabetes in its incipient stage, but piobably what he most needs is rest and a little more recreation. He is thinking some of taking a respite from work and he may go to Europe next summer, un less he improves in the spring." The state of Delaware is agitating the question of adopting Henry George’s single tax theory. It is claimed by the adherents of the single tax on land that wherever the plan has been tried it has worked successfully. Delaware has a population of iiOO.(MM) people and its con stitution would not prohibit the adoption of the single tax theory. The purpose of the single tax is to acquire sufficient revenue for all public necessities by a tax upon land alone. The improvements are not taxed, nor is personal property of any kind. The only source of revenue is the naked land, the argument is that by the adoption of the single tax policy the evil of land grabbing would be stopped, holding land for mere pur poses of speculation would be unproflta-
ble, and the inequalities generally result ' ing from the present complicated ays tern of taxation would be remedied. Logansport Pharos. Thomas Taggart, mayor of Indianap olis, says he is not in the race for governor. This is scarcely news to the peo pie. Taggart is said to be a genial man, but from all reports he is not equip] e 1 for the office of chief executive of the state. It requires higher qualifications than those of a mere ward politician to govern the great commonwealth of Indiana. Taggart as mayor of Indianapolis has probably reached the pinnacle of his powers as a statesman, and to attempt to spread him al! over the state of Indiana would be little less than ridiculous. Taggart received his big majority for mayor of Indianapolis largely for the reason that he is a gtxxl fellow, and while that is nice and every body likes gixxl fellows, yet fitness, calibre, special qualifications, etc.,should be allowed to govern in the selection of men for a great office like that of governor of Indiana. The democrats of Indiana will not commit such a blunder as to select a “good fellow" merely as candidate for governor. A numlw of our citizens have ex pressed a willingness to subscribe funds for the purpose of exploring beneath us ( to see what can be found, if anything. Such an enterprise might be regarded as a “dream” by many, but it should be । borne in mind that the surface indica tions in this locality are as good as are those in some places where, paying oil and gas wells have been driven, and the prospect of success here would be as good as was the ease in those towns when such undertakings were first pro jected. The oil and gas fields are ex tending toward the northern part of the state, and recent discoveries of oil in LaPorte county and other points in | northern Indiana would lead one to be- I lieve, or hope rather, that valuable stores may be buried in the depths of the earth in this locality. One of Walk erton’s old and substantial business men. ■ Claus Behrens, has always been led to believe, by some good indications, that either oil or coal could be found here He is interested in the matter and would like to see an investigation made. He would give substantial encouragement to the undertaking by giving §SO to a subscription to be devoted to that purpose, Probably §I,OOO, or near that, would be sufficient to bore a deep well and to ascertain whether we have or have not anything of value under us. [ This sum could no doubt be raised in s town and vicinity in subscriptions of . §5 and more. The amount subscribed s by each one would represent so much stock in the enterprise, which, if suc--3 cessful, would prove a good investment, . and if a failure no one would suffer any 5 great loss. This is a good scheme. ? Push it along. r t Z' s —z—--1 . They are flying north.
