tended the organizing of the Maccabee lodge at Walkerton last Friday night; they reported a splendid time. The protracted meeting at the M. E. church is progressing nicely with a well filled house each night. The new minister, Mr. Burton, is well liked by all. Born, to the wife of Anderson Bea gles, a boy, Sunday, Dec. 1. Ed Wallace has quit railroading and went to Huntington to look for a warmer job. J. E. Johnson shipped a car load of hogs and sheep from this place Wed needay. Joe Waterhouse, Frank Johnson and Wm. Grace Sutherlin’s spotted pony died last Saturday. X. Y. Z. Smith. KNOX Not a vacant business room in our town, and houses to rent are very scarce. We have had a few snow storms that, melted ns fust, as they fell. Our roads are reasonably fair for the season. Batch Marton, while at Hamlet struck Jacob Stryker on the head with a shovel, fracturing his skull. The prosecution in this, like all other cases, is extremely tame. Comment is unnecessary. A painful accident happened in Illinois last Friday between parties : formerly residents of this town. Roy Willhelm, aged 15 years, was cleaning : his shot gun which was loaded. The I gnu accidentally went off and shot his । mother in the bowels. She lived but ! a few minutes after the accident. Her | remains were brought to Knox and j buried by the side of her late husband, John Willhelm. F. B. Hart was called by despatch I to Macy, Miami county, to see his sick I mother, who is supposed to be in her I last sickness. She is 88 years old ! past, ami for years has been enjoying ! her sojourn on the “Delectable monni tains,” preparatory to crossing the ■ river. Our merchants are still busy as the j building boom has continued beyond I the expectation of many. H. R. Robbins lias moved into his I own residence, and has now resumed j his position in his office, which during j the past year has been much neglected on account of his building. There is but very little sickness at j present in Knox, and the doctors are ‘ having rest and starvation. Starke county now has a republican board of commissioners for the first I time in the history of the county. Candidates are laying their wires for the coming campaign. Alonzo Garner went to Columbia I City and brought home a better half, formerly Lily Godwin. Miss G. was! for some time a resident, of Knox and | had a host of admiring friends here. I IWe all join in wishing the newly ! married couple a happy consort Jacob Strifling is still jubilating •over his baby. It is probably the first Jake ever had. We trust be may tone down by the time of the next recur rence, as blessings are liable to continue. We have in our town one 7th day meat shop, and two first day meat I shops. The result is quite lucrative to | the Advent, as on that day he has a l monopoly of the trade. John C. Larrew is still confined to ' his sick chamber. A good hatter would do well in this ) place, as there is none in this county j and probably none nearer than Chicago. TEEGAROEN. The Mennonites will preach at the church Saturday night, Sunday morning and evening.
