A move is on foot among the Knights of Pythias of the U. 8. to build a Pythian sanitarium at Hot Springs, Ark., at a cost of $500,000. The institution will be for no one but Knights of Pythias. To raise this sum it is proposed to assess each member sl, so says an exchange. A Warsaw woman put carbolic acid in her eye, thinking it was eye water. There is danger of her loosing the eye. The many accounts in the papers of accidents occurring in administering medicines should be a warning to the people to carefully label every bottle in the house and to have both eyes open when taking medicine. The “monkey-hump” must go. It is no longer considered necessary to ape the ungraceful position of your great ancestor in his antediluvian gambols, in order to ride a bicycle with elegance and ease, and the up-to-date wheels are being made with high handle bars, enforcing an upright position. It is to be hoped, says an exchange, for the sake of posterity that this sounds the deatli knell of monkomania. Good for Success. Timo was when a youg man, to amount to anything, must needs go into one of the professions. But that time has gone by. Brains now count as much in farming as in conducting law cases, in cat peutcring or in doctoring. A young man with a good trade as his capital, reinforced by energy, honesty, good habits and attentive^ ■ s, has a fortune in his own hands. His chances of success are better than those of the average young lawyer, waiting for his first case. Don't despise the trades, they are less contin iug, less slavish than the professions. Ami there is no calling more respec table than an honest trade.- Argos Reflector. The Smallpox at LaPorte. Speaking of the smallpox case at LaPorte the Argus says : “There is a case of smallpox in the city, the first one for fully twenty years, but there is no cause for alarm ns the most ample precautions have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease. The case is located in the family of Henry Fuchs, on the corner of Third and L streets. Walter Smith, a four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, of Whiting, is the victim of the disease. | Mrs. Smith has been seriously sick for | some time at her home in Whiting, ' and she lately procured a nurse from Chicago, who introduced smallpox into the family and Mrs. Smith now 1 has it. Before there was any thought of smallpox in the Smith family two of the. little children were brought to their grandparents in this city to re- | main until (heir mother gets better, 1 and last Saturday the little boy was j taken sick. He received the best of care and on Monday it became appar-
ent to Dr. Darling who was attending the case that the disease was smallpox. The house was immediately quarantined by the Board of Health, and i every possible precaution has been taken to keep the contagion from i spreading. The other members of 1 the family have been vaccinated and 1 all have been prevented from mingling with their neighbors or friends. It is likely the disease will run through the family, but there is no reason to doubt I that it will be confined to that house, i The most vigorous efforts will bo made ;to do this and there is no reasonable j doubt of their success.
