At the rate the school faculty is going they won’t turn out a scholar with enough sense left to set a dinner table.” Cultivates His Wheat. An old farmer expresses the opinion that the time is not far distant when our farmers will cultivate their wheat crop. He relates an instance where a farmer tried cultivation and the results secured. The farmer removed every other fluke from his drill, thus sowing the wheat sixteen inches apart and double the quantity. He then cultivated the wheat after the spring rains, and was rewarded with forty bushels of wheat to the acre, while the remainder of the field sown in the old way, only produced twenty bushels to the acre.—Ex. WALKERTON HAS THREE RAILROADS. Walkerton has its third railroad, the track layers of the Three I having reached this place last Saturday forenoon with their construction train and all the other necessary appliances for railroad building. A large, number of people were on the spot to see the railroad come in, and the crowd increased at the scene of operations as the day wore on. Railroad building as now conducted is somewhat of a novelty and very interesting to see. The train loaded with ties and rails moves along as may be required and on each side of cars are rollers upon which the ties and rails are moved to the front of the train where men are stationed to receive and place them in position. After the rails are fastened down for some distance the train moves to the end of the newly laid track and the former operation is repeated. By this method from one and a half to one and three-quarters miles of track can be laid in one day. On Tuesday the track laying was completed through town and as far as a mile and a half I north of town, near Aleck Vincent’s farm. The work is being carried forward rapidly and Contractor Mclntosh thinks that the track-layers will probably reach South Bend by the latter part of this month.
