A TRIP TO NORTH DAKOTA. A Few Facts of Interest Concerning that Country. Editor Independent : Having just returned from a trip to North Dakota ami thinking that it might be of interest to Home of the readers of the Independent to hear from that country, I "ill give you a brief history of our trip. August first in company with about fifteen others we started for North Dakota. We were met at Chicago by Max Bass, immigration agent, of St. I mil, Minn., who accompanied us on our way. We arrived at Church’s l erry, N. D , Friday, Aug. 3, at 1:30 p. m., w here we were met by some of our friends and taken to their homes. Vletound the people there enjoying good health and very Une weather, but we were somewhat disappointed to find some of their crops so poor. They have hud a very dry summer and all the wheat and oats that were not well put in suffered very much for moisture. We were surprised to see the amount of poor farming done in that country. In cases where the ground was well plowed hist fall and summer and the farmers hustled around and got their wheat out early there will be good crops. We drove past fields where on one side of the road there was an ex client crop while on the other side there was not a half crop, and in manv places where they stubbled their wheat, they w ill not get their seed back. The oats crop, ns a general thing, is not so good us the wheat.. Potatoes are look i“g well. Vegetables of all kinds are doing well. We took dinner with Mr. Ford antl they had some very Hue cabbage and potatoes of their own raising. They have in their garden nearly everything we raise here. He sowed his barley n little too late to make a full crop, but he seems to think there is 11 better future awaiting him. He has hired to one of his neighbors to help feed a threshing machine and gels $3 a day and 11 50 a day for his team. Only ! expmieiioed hands can get that. The country is flooded with men seeking for work and finding none. Harvest , wages were $1 50 per day. Harvesting was a week or ten days earlier than usual. In the greater 1 part of the country they were about through "ben we left, except in a few Mkuma^u Abe 16 d River valley where t I I V !T. had no* yet • Ine lied Inver \ alley {s the truest i country, all things cmmideied, that we ' o-oi HPQMHScni ± sold in the spring for $lB per acre, and the land was quite a distance from 1 market. Improved land in the same neighbor hood is selling at $25 per acre. ( Farmers there are experimenting on corn raising. We saw one field of 200 acres of very tine corn. If the frost does not catch it it "ill make a very large vield. Corn in Minnesota and ’ Wisconsin, where we passed through in the day time, will be almost nn entire failure. Some of the fields have 1> en cut up and the fodder is not over four , feet high. Wheat and oats are very poor. Wo saw fields of oats so short that they were mowed with the mower. The chinch at Cando was oiganized on Saturday, Aug. 1, with a member ship of seventy-nine members. The services were held in a granary 48 feet wide and 52 feet long. Iho build ings i 1 that country are like those in this state "hero tho country has been settled the longest. They have very line buildings, large barns ami houses, and where it is new settled they have very poor and small buildings. iheir wells are nearly al dug wells and the water is very c >ol and fresh. Wo did not like the taste of some of the water but the greater part of it is very fine. On the land ‘‘homesteaded ’ by the colony from this place 1 hey can get water at from 9 to 30 feet. Sand for plastering and fine gravel can lie liad on Homo ot I lie laud they have taken. But very few families have moved onto their claims yet. They expect to rent another season. I To those wishing to see North Da- . kota this fall, I will say that Mr. Bass ! informs me that there will bo excursions run on the following dates: Sept. 11 and 25 and Oct. 9. The sane ! will be one fare for the round trip ! plus $2. Danii l Gensingi r. Teegarden, Ind., Aug 13, ’94. WORK WRLL RONE. Cedar Rapids, lowa.—l suffered with dyspepsia and disordered liver and would frequently throw up bile. 1 I procured a bottle of Simmons Liver , Regulator, and, after using half of it 11 was completely cured. One of my , । lady customers told me the other day J that Simmons Liver Regulator comj pletely cured her of sick headache. — ' I). Olds. Dr. Price’s Cream Baking Powder World’s Fair Highest Award.
Bank Appraisements too Low. 1 he State board of tax commission, ers has learned, it is said, of a combination among the banks of certain counties of Indiana by which they have secured appraisements for taxation purposes at 60 cents on the dollar of capital stock. Laporte county banks are conspicuous in the combination. Some of the banks in question have large surplus funds and their stock sells for $1,50. “The appraisement, returned by some of the local boards,” Gov. Matthews says, “is out rageously low.” If citizens appeal m eases the board may reassess, but uLritn’a?'™ or deer park. On the Crest oe the Alleghenies.
