'Die republicans intend to make this occasion a sort of state rally. Ex-Vice-President Levi P. Morton is talked of tn connection with the re publican nomination for governor of New York. The National Encampment, Grand Army of the Republic, meets at Pitts i burgh, Pa., this year, beginning on the loth of September.
The Professional Woman's League is arraying itself against Madeline Pollard, of Breckinridge fame, be-
cause of her intentions to go upon the stage. C. G. Powell, formerly a LaPorte newspaper man but who has been in the public service for sever H years, talks of starting a new republican paper in that city. '1 he importance of correct punctuation is illustrated by the following circumstance. By the misplacement of a semi-colon in the new tariff bill all diamonds are let in free. A newspaper that makes a practice of stealing its “original” editorials from its exchanges is generally without tone or individuality. Such work doesn’t pay, besides it is not honest. The Corbett-Jackson fight has been ^ectared^WF. The blowimr nn.l t.wrr finite as usual. It makes good and cheap advertising for both pugilists in their theatrical business. Major Dye, commander in-chief of the Corean army, is an American, having been a resident of Chicago, form erly. He is a graduate of West Point and was a Union soldier duri ' the rebellion. The Nappanee Advance says:
’‘Several cases of smallpox have appeared at At wood, a town about 14 1 miles south of Nappanee. The third case was sent to the pest house Satin- ; day. There is much excitement in the i neighborhood.” < The planet Mars is attracting the I attention of astronomers the world ’ over. The canals and bright specks on its surface are the main objects of interest. Some scientists believe that Mars is inhabited by intelligent , beings like ourselves and that they are trying to communicate with this earth, holding that the bright specks are signals to at tract our attention. Prof. Ely, the able professor of political economy in the University of Wisconsin, was to have been tried for political heresy l ist Monday, at Madi-.'-—-Appearance, and the charges wiH probably receive no further attention. There was, apparantly, no just foundation for the charge made against the professor. Ue is too broad and able a man to be guilty of holding the wild, socialistic doctrines of which he was accused. His writings on political economy are sufficient proof of this statement. “Young men,” says the Lewiston j (Me.) Journal, “who have to scratch hard for an education nowadays may think their effoi ts and sacrifices less arduous if they hear Rev. Dr. Joseph Ricker’s account of his beginnings at , Waterville College. Entering in 1835, j he walked, with just $5 in his pocket, from his home in I’arsoniield, near the New Hampshire line, to W aterville. With a part of his money he bought a bag of wheat, and had it ground in the mill, and took it to his room in the college. How the kickers do like to kick.— LaPorte Herald. Well, why shouldn’t they? Isn’t that about the only thing u kicker can do and do it right ? The Landis Johnson congressional muddle in the Tenth Indiana district has at last been happily solved. At Logansport Wednesday, Aug. 22, the republican congressional convention decided upon a new candidate in the selection of Dr. Hatch, of Kentland, Newton county, who was nominated on the eleven! h ballot. Here is some good sense from Sam Jones: “ The misery of it all is, ami the trouble with our political life and
our social life is, that the devil is wallowing in nino tenths of the homes . in our land. A man that will bring whisky into his home, or that will drink whisky, ought not to be surprised it his boy should be a drunkard. 1 say that a man that will do that is a fool or a rascal, one. Now I want you to hear that, or you are a mixture. llf a fellow has been combined, then grace will lose its power. A man that will sit down and gamble and play cards before his boys, and don't want them to l>e gamblers, is a fool or a rascal, one. Here is a story for our political stumpers who desire to illustrate the terrible situation for which the other fellows, of course, are responsible. It will do for either side. “ A swe , u . lng num was driving up n hill with a load of potatoes. He was so profane that his conversation on almost every topic was interlarded with blasphemy. On this particular occasion, the back end- ° Uhe wagon dropped out and ns entire load of potatoes rolled down hiH.andhe never uttered a single cuss word. A neighbor saw him and was suiprised at his meekness. He finally ventured to ask him why he tailed to resort to swearing when the occasion so strongly justified it. His
