NAN W N T The American Railway Uuanion by a vote of 112 to 100 has barred the negro from the order. The place selected is Hammond and the date July 9. The friends of Judge Johuston have finally decided that they can’t abide by the : decision of the “rump’” convention -; and propose to put another candidate ~in the fleld. : ~ Since the defeat of the railroad tax other measures to raise a subsidy for the Three I are being adapted. NORTH DAKOTA. A Letter From a Member of the North Dakota Colony. Caxpo, N. D., June 12, 1894. Eprror INpEPENDENT: I herewith gend you a letter which I wish you would publish, hoping that it will reach a great many of the Indiana people to whom I promised to write when I got loeated in North Dakota. But as my time to write is limited T take this method of reaching my friends—that is, all who take the InpEPENDENT (which I ean’t see how any of them can do without). In regard to North Dakota, I like it better than I anticipated. So far, we have had a better spring than I anticipated, a better spring in | which to do our work than I ever had {in Indiana while T was on the farm. We had a bad snow storm or blizzard, | as people herve call it, on the 18th of | April. Have had no snow here since. Had cold winds through April and the first of May, but ever since the first of May we have hiad nice weather., Had 1 two frosts that killed my corn which I | planted in April, but it grew up again | in a short time. If you should see the -1 corn now you would not suspeet that »| it had been injured a particle. Iveryy | thing I planted is doing well. Have o | out one hundred acres of barley for which I plowed the gronund this spring. Everybody has finished ‘‘seeding,” ¢ |and are now breaking up their raw - [ land for next year’s crops. It is dry here at present, but we had gquite a shower of rain this morning and good prospects for more, which we need. We received several letters from Indiana asking us whether woe were not frozen to death. 1 take the pleasurg of telling you people that while you had your suow and ecold rain, were wearing your overcoats and shivering with cold that we Lad the nicest kind of weather here. Wouldn't ask for any better. When you folks had nice warm weather we had cold winds and rain, but wheu the time of year came for nice weather we got it, and have had nice weatlier ever since. Can't tell how it will Le from now on. Will tell you later. I think we can grow anything up here that you can raise in Northern Indiana. I shall try to, at any rate. | Can tell better after awhile. If the lpditnr will publish my letters will ; write to you at least once a month. If any of you farmers wish to emi[grute to othier parts, or wish to better your condition, I think you would do well to come and take a glance at il\'nrth Dakota, as the soil is the very lbest and land here is eheap. One can ! | get lots of land with little money. | | The goverument land is going rapidly. | The best, of course, goes first. If you ]wzmt. to rent you can get extra good lchauces. You can get all the land yon { want to farm and get it all together, Exmd as the days here are long we can | put in lots of time if we want to, We ! now have 16 hours of sunshine. We E'cam work 18 hours in daylight. | Ifanyof the Indiana people wish | !:my more information than they grti ‘frum my letter in this paper let them | ! write to me and I shall give them all ’ iflu\ information that I can about North i % Dakota, and gla iy, foo, Huve not ] | had time to see much of the country !l :)‘M, but expect to go up to the woods | | next week after some wood which is a i free ‘*pitch in” for everybody. i ; H.
