The popu lation at that time was about 4,500, and the town government had then been in existence 30 years. Valparaiso barbers are cutting rat< s and drum corps are employed to march Ihe streets ami advertise the rival ' tonsoriaiists. Nine cents pays for a hair cut. The L. E. & W. will run an excur i sion Sunday, June 10, to Rochester and return at greatly reduced rates. Train leaves Walkerton at 9:05 a. m. Fare sl. New spring hats at Ida Beach’s. Cal’s hustling qualities, ■ combined with his ability as a writer, make him a valuable man in a newspaper office. Charles Jackson, foreman of one of D. IV. Place's Spencer Alligator hay presses, b;ded on last Monday 224 bales, or 30,835 pounds, of prairie hay with the assistance of T. A. Wolfe, John Steinke and Silas Baker. This was done in 9.} hours, the boys having to quit work on account of being outl of bide ties. The school board has appointed the ! following corps of teachers to take, charge of the Walkerton schools for the ensuing year: Will Clem, principal; Walter McCool, grammar department; Rose Nichols, second intermediate; Minnie Flatts, first intermediate; Lou Nichols, first primary; Myrtle Northam, second primary. 1511. For further particulars call on the local agent. ‘‘Rev.” Howard in Jail. Rev. G. S. V. Howard (excuse us i for using the title ‘‘Rev.’’), formerly of I Nappanee, and the Prohibition candidate for congress in the Thirteenth , district two years ago, was arrested recently ut Englewood, HL, and now occupies a cell in Cook county jail. He was indicted on a charge of forgery and operating a confidence game and he gave bond for J 1,500 for his appear- ! ance, but this was forfeited Muy 22d. Lo a reporter of the Chicago Tiibnne he said : “Had I known my ease was to be tried May 22 I should have given । myself up. I knew nothing about it until I was arrested. I know nothing about the Heywood & Morrill Rattan company of Boston. I suhpose Mr. iSimmington, who cashed the SSO cheek for me that caused all the trouble, got the company to cash it for him.” Jonathan Hickman, the murderer, was pardoned recently from the Northern prison by Governor Matthews. He was sentenced for life and had served about 20 years. The crime for which he was convicted was one of the foulest that ever blackened the criminal records of St. Joseph county. It was the murder of an j aged Polish couple, Joseph and Mary ' Cikoski, who lived near New Carlisle, jin the fall of 1874. The motive of i the crime was robbery. Upon what • grounds Hickman’s pardon was secured does not appear plain to the public, though Governor Matthews must have had strong reasons for granting the parole. The governor, J nevertheless, is being severely censured for his action in the matter. Notice of Ditch Letting.
