INO SIGNS OF PEACE. COAL OPERATORS AND MINERS FAIL TO AGREE. Troops Move Trains In Illinois— Volley Fired at a Nervy Striker—lndiana Militia May Be Called—War On in the Keystone State. News of the Strike. There is nothing in sight, according to a Springfield dispatch, to warrant the belief that the strike of the Illinois coal miners will be settled this week or the next either. A conference of coal operators of Central and Southern Illinois on the one hand and representatives of the State and Nationa M n - Workers’ Union was held at Springfield, but nothing looking toward a compromise or adjustment of the difficulty has been a. complishoJ. The parties are as far away from each other us ever. The representatives of the Miners’ Ass ciation stubbornly refuse td specify their demands. Some weeks ago, 1 y way of precaution, the Superintendent, Dr. Gapen. wrote ' President Mcßride, acquainting him with the wants of the institution, and Mcßride gave a written authority that forty carloads of c al might be mined for the Kankakee asylum. This permission was sent to a repro entative of the Miners’ Union in the I ankakee district, ami Dr. Gapen th night he was going to get his c al. CLEVERLY DETECTED. How an Oculist Showed Up a Fraudulent Claim Here is an interesting account of a very clever bit of detective work by an dcul st. It appears that in a large factory in which wore employe! several hundred parsonq one of toe workmen, in wielding hi, hammer, carelessly a lowed it to slip from his hand. It flew half way aero s the room and struck a fellow workman in the left eye. The man averred that his eye was blinded by the blow, although a careful examination failed to reveal any injury, there not being a scratch visible. He brought a m t iu the courts for c impensation for the loss of half of his eyesight, and refused all offers of compromise. Under the law the owner of the factory was responsible for an in my re- i suiting from an accident of this kind, t and although he believed ihat the man , was shamnung and that the whole ‘ zase was an attempt at swindling, he had about made up his mind that he would be c mpeTed to pay the claim. I The day of the trial arrived, and in I open court an eminent o -ulist retained ; by the defence examined the alleged . injured member, and gave it as nis opinion Unit it w.ia as ,r.x>a us tile i right oye. Upon the putintia's loud j prote t of his inab lity to see with his loft ovo, the oculist proved him a nor- i iurer and satistlod tbo com t and jury of tho falsity of his Olu'm. .And h< w d > you suppose he did it? Why, simply by knowing that the colors green and red combined n ake black, lie procured a black card on which a few words were written with green ink. Then the plaintiff was ordered to put < n a pair of spectacles with two dill ren‘ glasses, the o.ie for the right eye be ng re I and the one for the left eye con^i-ting of ordinary gla.s. Then the card was hand d him, and he was ordered to road the writing t n it. This he did without hesitation, and the cheat was at once exposed. The sound right ovo, fitted with the ed glass, was unable to distinguish the green writing on the biacK surface of the ea d, whi’o the left eye, which he pretended wa, sightVess. was the one with which the leading had to lie done.
