€l)c JndepcndenL WAhKERTON. INDIANA. MAY 12. 1894. W. A. ENDLEY, Editor. Congressman Conn has introduced a bill in the House asking for an appropriation to erecta foghorn in the Michigan City harbor. We have heard of many fool elec- • tion bets, but the following is the silliest of any of them. Two Muncie men, owners of fine dogs, bet on the election, and the winner was to have the hair off the dog belonging to the loser. The Goshen News thinks that Lem W. Royse, of Warsaw, is the logical candidate on the republican ticket for congressman. Royse’s boom is no doubt growing, but Jim Dodge, of Elkhart, would still seem to be a neck ahead in the race. Joseph Roberts, of Jefferson county, this state, deliberately committed suicide the other morning by drinking carbolic acid. He stoutly refused to take antidotes, and told those wnu were trying to aid him to go to hell. He died in great agony. People who are so anxious to die ought to be allowed to have their own way about it without interference.
The report that Aaron Jones will enter the race for congress should be taken with a grain or two of salt. The Thirteenth district supported Aaron solidly at the state convention for secretary of state and among his warmest supporters were the leading candidates for the congressional nomination. Aaron, of course, appreciates all this and would hardly care to frustrate matters in the district by entering the congressional race at this late date.
The question of reducing letter postage to one cent is being agitated in this country. In connection with this reduction, however, an increase of postage on second class matter is being advocated. This would include newspapers and other periodicals. There would be nothing just about this, as it would be lightening the burden on one class of people and placing it upon another. The rates of postage should be left as they are until a reduction can be made without making a certain class pay for it. ~ <:7 — nf ♦hn XTow

Quite a number of the K. of P. boys of this place will go to Plymouth next Monday, in response to an invitation from the lodge at that place, to assist in the work of confering the third rank upon twenty candidates, and also to attend a banquet. Valparaiso, Bremen and otner lodges will also be represented. The boys are Counting on a fine time and they will doubtless have it as the Plymouth people know how to entertain.
Randall's army which was encamped near Lal’orte has moved on towards South Bend. The citizens of LaPorte held an indignation meeting protesting against the army entering the city. A body of armed citizens met the army on the outskirts of the city and warned them not to enter. Randall and some of the other leaders grew insolent and were promptly arrested and placed in jail. The army marched around the city and cam|>ed in the woods near by, where they were helped to provisions by the municipal
authorities. Coroner Verier *»<

Randall Discharged. A dispatch from La Parte Wednesdoy afternoon says that General Ran dall and his staff were arraigned before Judge Noyes in the circuit court this morning on the charge of conspiracy to commit larceny. All pleaded not guilty. W. H. Harvey, of Chicago, Richter & Weir, of LaPorte, and Mayor Kreuger, of Michigan City, volunteered to defend the prisoners. The prosecution not being ready to proceed the case was continued until 10 o’clock to morrow. Bail was fixed at S6OO in each case and Randall and Lieut. Haulier furnished security. Later the case was reopened and the men were all discharged from custody on promise to leave the county at once. 'l'he officers joined the army and will start for New Carlisle this afternoon. Our readers will find Simmons Liver Regulator advertised in these columns. We advertise it, and use it, and we commend it as a safe and excellent medicine. We became acquainted with it in Georgia where it is a standard family medicine. We do not deny the merits of other preparations but simply state that this one commands confidence.
