FRO^ CHICAGO. I'he attack upon the Christian । Church has now become quite a sash iomible fad in this vicinity. i More than a year ago the Rev. O. F. ■ Gifford, of the Immanuel Baptist * .Church, of tins city, spoke before the । Ministers’ Union Meeting on the problem of evangelizing the masses. > I Tie began his remarks with the sfateH meid that at a certain meeting, thi n recently held, the Christian Church was spoken of as a fueler in the eh>vap lion of the human race, but that re 1 mark was received with hisses; but 1 later on Chris! was mentioned and bis । name was applauded to the echo. This, ; to the Doctor's mind, was clear and conclusive evidence that the masses j were not in sympathy with the church, j and that they were in full sympathy ami touch with Jesus. To take st calm view of the Christian j Church to day, one timls it diflieu’t to discover the immense gulf, ho often doplored, existing between the church ami the masses, and the calm observer cannot help thinking that those who spend so much elf n t in spanning this ' gulf are but lighting a plnmb-m. Os the four hundred Protestant । Churches in Chicago, I don't think there is one, not even the wealthitst or I most inistocratic, where even the poorest or the most ignorant would not | find a hearty ami liol pful welcome, i f he l or *lia w ere seokiu^ the spiritual ndvnntag.. uhieh the rlmn h HtT.rds. Tl o writer's mqnui id mice with many of the ministers ami laymen of tlm dlff-n nt denominations in Chicago has led him to think that the churches aie not exclusive eit her to poverty, nationnlitv. .or color, but ratio 1 there is great ' earnestness, both i i prayer, ami labor, 1 on behalf < I th--e who aie outside the j church. Ami, furthermore, failing to I induce this class to fellowtjhip with' .them, in huge numbers, in theit own I saucliuiries, they contribute liberally] of their means and labors to erect and i cai i v forwmd attractive chapels ami , mission stations for the benefit of the i j masses. Not a thing is li ft undone in t ids count n , tit her in citv, town, or ' filial distiiet, to attract the poorer Classis ami general mm church gm is Io the House of God. lam pels. Dali CTgnizaid that many people of W< d;h ami ictinemmd m the dill- rent ■ b u< I . dcvofi mt only m, o s and plater, Imt do as they । ray , fm tin- spnitiml bcmlit < t the tueavuil, the poor, ami i v- n idegraded. As I said before, it is a popular fad to berate the chuieli for not coming up to her high opportunity, not onlv, but also to iLiunt her shortcomings and ■ even her degeneracy, as they deem it, ' before tin- world for contempt and scorn. It is difficult for nmnv people to sei* ju-t wind motive uctuat-a these ussuiiauts. |f may possiLH be that they have given th-ir whole ulteiitmn to that side of the question; if so, thev . could not be expected to ariim at oth , er coneluuionN. We cannot believe 1 them to be actuated by a desim f r notoriety. It s-ems to us well, however, ti lit they should bi mien their visi n, ami also take a back w nrd glance. In so doing they will find that this immense number of mm church goers in Chicago ami Milwaukee, ami other Western cities, do m>t attend church simple be | cause 1 Lev do m>t want to. Ti e { ch Ueli- s and cmtpels ami mission stu - tiims are open to them ami pastors of all denominations call on them, and -■utreat them to atteml upon the minis * t rations of the sjn-timry ; again and' again they are invitml, so that they ate ' left entirely without exeusi*, but. tho’ fait is that on Sunday in the summer i lime they prefer to go, am] do go, to! the j arks, summer gathering places aiouml the cities, horse races, beer I gardens, theatres, etc., etc. Ami in their backward glance they will find that the Apostle Paul dmg nosed the ease long ago when he said, “The carnal mind is at enmity against Gml ami is not subject to the law of God, neither, indeed, can be." It miplit bo lu lpfill to th-*ni to listen (..Mi lIo K n r.nt .e. . wlo-n lie con fe- ies his mistnkc in the sumo mutter. He became cranky on the subject of the masses, ami also became disgusted with the church and left it to its doom. But lie bad not worked outside the church long before he found that he bad no co workers there. The harvest was great but the laborers outside the I church were none, and the first and I great reason why the unsaved were not : being saved was because they did not waut to be saved, and instead of its being the fault of the church that they were poor ami homeless and ignorant, he found they preferred pleasure and ease ami beer to wealth and education and refinement. These same conclusions have, been reached by many honest and earnest w’orkers in this age of unparalleled Christian activity, ami । we hope that our friends who are complainiug so much about the churches j will pause and consider, and if so we feel confident they will find the Chris- ! tian Church still the Church of Christ, I and the only means now in operation ' for the evangelization and christiani- । zatiou of the world.
