It is reported that Ligonier is to have a daily paper. E. Finley Kitson is the projector and the first number will appear August 1. A Logansport paper, in speaking of the trees in a park at that place, says: •‘Whose foliage will provide umbrage for a sweltering city in future years.’ 1 A Michigan man has invented a machine for picking potato bugs. It is drawn by two horses and the motion creates a young cyclone which draws the bug from his perch to a receptacle where he is cared for later. The Independent is m receipt of the tenth annual premium list of the Farmers’ I nion fair to beheld at New Carlisle Sept. I 1 .), 20 and 21. The New Carlisle fair lias been a success
from the start and has contributed largely to the advancement of New Carlisle and surrounding country. The people there wouldn’t do without it. A horseman speaking from experience in handling cobs, gives this advice; “Never attempt a thing witii a young horse and fail. Horses maj not, be as intelligent as human beings, but they possess intelligence to. know when they are, so to speak, on top. Whatever you undertake in teaching a young horse, plan thoronghly and carry it out. Be kind, but firm, and from the first teach the pupil that submission is necessary ami will be enforced.” The Indiana weather crop bulletin issued July 10 is as follows: No rain fell and temperature and sunshine were exceedingly favorable to harvesting and growing crops, except that perhaps rain is needed in some localities and that the nights of the latter part of the week were quite cool. The wheat harvest is now nearly fin-1 ished everywhere and threshing has commenced. The yield is reported everywhere to be very good, the heads are (Hied with plump berries and the straw is heavy in most fields. The rye, hay and timothy harvest is still progressing with tine results. Ch>ver yielded a moderate crop only. Oats are in good condition, maturing rapid ]y. Their harvest will begin soon. Corn continues to grow vigorously in the southern portion. 1! has begun to tassel in some fields. Pasturage is in fair condition, but soon will need rain. All other vegetation promises well, (’specially potatoes.
