Some of the neighboring towns have been visited quite often lately by burglarsand mischievous tramps who do their work after dark. Walkerton lias been fortunate in this respect, due principally to the fact that we have a night-watch. The Valparaiso Evening Messenger of November 27 contained an excellent write-up of the new G. A. A San Francisco journal says that a Pennsylvania woman a year ago answered an advertisement of a Washington state farmer who wanted a wife. She went west and was married. The other day the farmer sliced her into mincemeat with the family butcher knife. This incident certainly shows the. value of advertising. If it hadn’t been for advertising perhaps that, woman would have been dragging • out a miserable existence to-day as an old maid in Pennsylvania. J. R. Parsons writes from Peoria, HL: “Dr. Lambert arrived home a few days ago and says he is better than he has been for a long time, and indeed he looks and acts that way.” We have been shown a letter from the doctor to a gentleman and his wife in this city in which the doctor says that he is at home and in good health in all respects. He arrived home on the evening of the 14th inst. and has been very busy since receiving friends, answering letters and attending to the many things needing his attention. Dr. Lambert formerly resided here and became temporarily deranged, the result of illness. —LaPorte Herald
Here is a lesson worthy of heed if I there be any such case in Walkerton: ; “Theodore Hagemaster, of Porter sta- ; tion, is in a peck of trouble, caused by carelessness. His saloon burned recently and the adjuster went there to settle the loss several days ago. The check was all made out ready to pay over, when it was discovered that the deed to the property was in his wife’s name, and the insurance policy in his own. Hagemaster had deeded the i property to his wife after he had it inI sured, and had neglected to have the i policy transferred. Now thy company will not pay the loss until it is legally decided who shall get the money.” Foster’s Forecast. His Heart was Broken. Senator S. Parker, of Toledo, 0., was recently found dead at his home with his heart broken, literally as well as figuratively speaking, for the organ was rent in twain. His sudden demise was the culmination of continued brooding over the misdeeds of his son, S. B. Parker. Less than two weeks ago the latter was arrested on a charge of forging the name of his uncle, Dr. Sewell S. Parker. A couple of days afterward he was visited by his* father at the jail. The disgrace of seeing his son imprisoned for a ciiminal offense proved too much for him. Ou Thursday night he complained of feeling unwell; that evening he was found dead in his room. Dr. Parker examined his dead brother’s body and reported that he had never come in contact with a similar case. The rupture of the heart, he believes, was actually] brought on by grief at the son’s disl grace; the organ was separated and iur two distinct parts literally a “broken heart.” One word describes it—“perfection.”’ We refer to DeWitt’s Witch Hazel Salve, cures obstinate sores, burns, skin diseases and is a well known cure for piles.
