Long and Desperate Contest Concluded as Mr. Cleveland Disired—Twenty-three Republicans and Twenty Democratic Senators Vou <1 for the Measure. End <> the Fight. Unconditional repeal ba? carried the day in the United States Senate. At 7:10 o’clock Monday night the Voorhees bill was passed by tno decisive vote of 4.3 to 31. It was the same ioleal majority of 11, indicated when the voting began three days before. It remains now only to r< c ncile minor differ nee? of phia eology between the Senate and the House, and, this being done, Ures dent U eveland s signature will make the rep • 1 bill a law. Some experiments in military ballooning have just been made in France. Five balloons were released from the Esplanad • des Invalides in Paris, the aeronauts in charge having been previously instructed t> pass over a radius of twenty miles of country supposed to be held by aij enemy, and then todes'end as closely as possible to Combs la Ville. One of the balloons descended within a mile of the desired place, and two oth rs at a point somewhat more distant from it. Exposure to Sunstiiue. Apropos of the effect of exposure to sunshine destroying microbes, Mrs. Percy Frankland, in Longmans', notes the interesting fact that exact experiments conducted in the Lake of Geneva to ascertain by means of photographic plates the depths to which the sun's rays penetrate, showed that they did not reach beyond 553 feet, at which depth the intensity of the light is equal to that which is ordinarily observed on a clear but moonless night.
LEARNED TO LOVE A SURGEON. An Elephant Which Underwent » Painful Operation and Was Grateful* An English civil engineer, resident of Calcutta, has in his possession a valuable elephant, to which he is muon attached, says the St. Louis I’osu-Dis-pateh. Not,Tong ago the animal ©as afflicted with a very troublesome inflammation of the eyes, from which ne lost his sight. The discon relate ow_ner consulted a surgeon and bogged him to do his utmost to cure the elephant. The surgeon decided to use lapis inieinalis, a remedy which is very efficacious in similar afflict ions of the human eye. The keeper was called, and a few in iments afterward the elephant was made to kneel down before tin man of science, who quickly treated one of the inflamed eyes with the caustic. As io >n as the elenhant f dt the effects of the burning solution, he uttered a le.’rilic roar, and, maddened with pain, ran around in his cage, tearing down everything that camo in his way. It was several hours before ho could be pacified by his keeper. When several days afterward the surgeon pg id his second visit, he found to his great sTff!' prise that his treatment had worked wonders, for the <ye was entireli cured. He decided to use the siinjf Remedy on the. other eye, but, to all danger, ordered the animal ^9. chained. This precaution, howei^ 1

The second treatment resulted in the entire cure of the eyes of t he elephant. Sorrow in the Near Future Awaits those who disregard symptoms of liver disorder. Ttic Age of* Wometß. i The with to conceal her age is so । popularly supposed to be second nature to every woman that it has come to be accepted almost as one of her prerogatives. Even on the witness stand legal inquiry and judgment are very lenient on this point in America. Over in Austria, however, it seems, it is a serious offen-e, and recently a marriage was declared void, because the husband proved that his wife had deceived him as to her age, claiming to be fifteen years younger than she really was. In this connection the celebration the other day of the ninety-ninth birthday of a still vigorous woman is worth im nti* ning as bringing together a company * f the sex who strove each to l>e the older, not younger, than the other, th ise who had touched the 00 mark annoueing the fact with a pride that quite silenced the immature matrons of 78 and >5. — Man's system Is like a town.
