He informed a reporter for this paper that he should not enter any more | races. He has paddled through two j serious accidents and the third time he i might get his neck broken.—Bremen Standard. The Chicago Inter Ocean truthfully remarks: “If any men in any quarter ever paid full value for tickets of admission to t’ 1 world’s fair the editors and publishers all over the w-est have done so. For a year past on their news pages and editorial pages they have never neglected an opportunity to advertise and boom the fair. The sneering allusion of cerain papers to I “deadheads” and “dead-beats” is wholly uncalled for. The great bulk of western editors have earned their tickets as honestly as any class have by the labor of their hands.” Congressman Conn is said to have a solution for the financial dilemma, which he will likely introduce soon in the shape of a substitute to the Sherman law, if given an opportunity. His scheme is briefly as follows: “Open our mints to the free and unlimited coinage of silver at a ratio of 16 to 1, and lor every 37J grains of fine silver delivered at a mint, issue, as the owner of the silver mint elects, either a legal tender certificate for one dollar, redeemable in gold, or a silver dollar of ; 412 j grains weight, which should also be legal tender and redeemable in gold; provided, that the owner of the silver pay into the treasury at the time the silver was delivered the difference between the prevailing market prices of both gold and silver.”

Goaded by the criticisms of the state press, Gov. Mathews ordered the state militia to go to Roby, the mecca of sports and prize fighters, to prevent the proposed fight between Griffo and Lavigne, last Monday. Tho services of the militia were not needed, however, as the fight had been declared off. Gov. Mathews, it is said, proposes t^ stop all attempts at prize fighting ST A Y AT HOMS’ An Eastern Philoscpher Addresses Himself to Bosh M”n and W^meu Who Do Too Much Gadding. Here is a little philosophy from an ■ eastern exchange that many persons, especially men who Ibiuk they emi t remain at home of evenings and women who must go giulding dining the duv, would do well to lead and heed : 'J ruly it is wonderful how little of resources the majority of people have within themselves to entertain them- I selves. We carry our natural love and . instinct for the gregarious into the exframe. Our everlasting i lea is to see somebody, to be with somebody, or to mingle in a crowd. Few men pass a full evening at home unless they are sick or go to bed after supper. The clnb, beer garden, secret society, card party, cigar store, political organization or social circle some place claims their attention . Women are never so happy as when on the go—shopping, prayer meeting, Sunday school, sewing circle, calling on some one, attending teas, I luncheons and receptions; or in any | other visible way getting away from I themselves. I think I quoted the oth- ! er day the remark of Pascal—that most of the ills of life result from “man’s inability to sit still in a room." A people everlastingly on the go, reading nothing but the newspaper, net taking the time to sit down and think, are bound to become dupes of every ism and led astray by every wind of doctrine. We have precious little rationality anywhere, simply because people cannot stay with themselves long enough to study anything in detail, They rush to u lecture because the crowd goes, but will not sit down to read a better one at home. The I spoken word is apt to be all froth and [ foam, intent ! for the hour and a mixed audience, but the permanent lecture in print is for thoughtful perusal and slow consideration. In other words, it mnst be studied in solitude—something the masses abhor, and for which we suffer the constant ignorance of the hour. One thing is sure, if a man wants to know anything above the average he must make up his mind to sit still in a room several times a week and at lo ng ntervals, too. The same remark npiplies to our sisters. DR. LINKENHELTS COUGH COMPOUND.
