EDUCATING THE BLIND. A Superb Institution for that Purpose - Indiana’s Liberality in Providing Ample facilities for Educating the Blind. The fall term of tho Blind Institute at Indianapolis opens September 18, The al tendance for the past year was, 150 which, while the largest in the history of the institute, yet did not• test its capacity, which is nearly 200 Moro than 1,000 blind boys and girls have received instruction here, all of whom have been benefited, many of ■ whom have been lilted for earning a livelihood, and have since won even uuusnnl success in life. Jacob Mays, ' Os Anderson, is a capitalist of large, means, and Harry Hockett, of ihesame (own, a successful produce dealer, both 1 totally blind. Two of the most prominent church organists of Indianapolis are blind men who thus earn eamtortalde salai hs. One of Ihe bnsiwtt, exactot and cheei fullest justices k»f the ’state capital is Esquire Walpole, totally blind. The largest music houses of the city employ blind tuneis, । Albert Swindh•>, of Mimtgopiejjl^ojju^ has invented a typewriter for TiTe use Os the blind which greatly facilita/cs Hu writing of the “point” letters. Al though without a particle of sight he devised every feature of the machine which will be a boon to those of his class. Aim ng the most skilled in the use of the ordinary Remington writer are Misses Barbara Whitson, Mattie Raed and Ora Rush, who with the othI ers mentioned in this sketch, are graduates of the Indiana Institute. Os 1 course not all, nor a majority, of tho pupils attain such success, but they show that with native ability and industry the blind child can be educated to Jo anything, as some one has said, but see. The convention of instructors and friends of the blind recently in session at Chicago, was presided over by the gifted but sightless chaplain of congress, W. 11. Milburn, and was attended by representatives from nearly every civilized country on the globe. Lime was when parents, through sho-t- --; ighted love for their unfortunate child, kept it at home w here it spent weary hours in the corner of the room a piti ful, useless and regretted member of society. But the majority of such parents now look to the future welfare of the child and send it to the institution especially created and equipped to en‘ lighten the minds, make skilled the hands and bring sunshine and hope to the hearts of this unfortunate class. Children are received between the ages of 6 and 21, and those over the Jatter age are admitted iu case they dl? slle to learn a trade. if The institution being suppuicted by , the state, it is free to all worthy ap- ; plieants from Indiana. Those inter- . ested in the blind should write to the > ! superintendent for information, who \ will cheerfully answer all inquiries and furnish the necessary application blanks. Address Prof. E. E.
