Tank Bros, are buying and shipping each day from 1,300 to 1,500 quarts of huckleberries. The crop is holding out well and the berries are large and of fine quality. Father Morrissey lias been appointed president of Notre Dame ■ university to succeed the late Father , Walsh. Rev. There have been rains all around us, but right in the immediate locality of Walkerton none has fallen, to speak of, for five or six weeks. Rochester Sentinel: The sensational newspaper and the neighborhood gossip are on an equal footing. Neither has ever accomplished any reformation whatever and both have given their communities unwarranted heartwbivh wan only VIIU Ut the grave. A Starke county farm fence is decorated with a sign which reads: “If any man or woman’s cows or oxen gets in these here oats, his tail or her tail will be cut off as the case may be. I am a Christian and pay my taxes, but d—n a man who lets his critters run loose.” A would-be highwaymen near LaPorte stopped a farmer the other night at the point of a smoke pipe, but it happened to be light enough for the farmer to distinguish the pipe from a revolver and he jumped out of his wagon and proceeded to administer a good licking to the fellow, who made a hasty exit from the scene. Pickles are coming in now at the Walkerton factory, the first having been brought in on the 17th inst. Two hundred bushels were brought in on Monday, the largest amount up to date—Tuesday—that has been received in one day this season. Foreman John Noblit, of the pickle works, informs the Independent that there is a splendid stand of pickles in this locality and with favorable weather the crop will be very large. The following dispatch throws some light on the past history of the “immortal J. .N,” whose death occurred a lew days ago. J. N. free, the “Immortal J. N”is upon his death bed.
