From birth a boy can own property; nt seven he is, if intelligent, answer able for a crime; at fourteen, if necessary, he could choose his guardian, and could contract marriage; at fourteen he is punishable for a misdemeanor; nt eighteen he is qualified for military service; at twenty-one he may declare himself independent of his father, and is old enough to vote; at twenty-live he is eligible for congress; at thirty to the United States senate; at forty to the presidency; at forty-live he is exempt from military duty. Jntei'estmg Facts Concerning the Northern Prison. Os the 763 convicts in the northern prison 601 are single, 217 married and 45 widowers, says the Dispatch. The intemperate number 571 and the temperate 192. Os the total number 652 can read and write, 14 can read only and 97 can neither read nor write. The penitentiary has two inmates who were over 70 years of age at the I time of their conviction, while it con- 1 tains 109 under 20 years when sent up. The ages of the greatest number of inmates ranges between 20 to 25 years, of whom there are 233. Seven lire over 60 years of age. The prison wall, which has been standing since the penitentiary was erected here, is gradually decaying and needs attention at the hands of the legislature. The wall must be I repointed and the capping repaired The mortar has crumbled and fallen' away until the water from rainfall . runs into the wall. This causes the 1 wall to alternately freeze and thaw, and results in great injury. It is estimated that it will cost SI,OOO to make suitable repairs. The northern prison has a library fund of $1,779.43, which is in the care of Warden French, and as soon as additional room is afforded, he purposes to add materially to the stock of books on hand. MOUNT 'VERNON. Mrs. Mart Miller has been suffering with tin attack of the “grip” for some time past. J. L. Hargrave, who lias been musing some badly lacerated fingers, has «o far recovered the use of them that be was enabled to return to his position last Monday. Bernard McCabe was called to Chicago last week to attend the funeral of his cousin, Frank Stack. Mount Vernon Literary Society convened at the usual hour last Saturday evening, and, in spite of the bad weather, the attendance was good. Simon Rensberger is unusually pleasant and good natured this week, and yet has a mastered and submissive look. 'The cause of it all being the presence of a line baby girl at his house since last Sunday morning, Jan. 29tb. Sam’l McComb has sold his farm to Mart Miller and gives possession of the same the first of April. Louisa DeLabarre, who has been visting with her parents for several weeks past, returned to South Bond last week. Trebou. LA PAZ. The flag on our school house was hung at half mast last. Monday on account of Blaine’s funeral. Rev. Zike is in poor health now and bis son Frank lias been very sick, but is better.
Mrs. “Bub” Barber who was reported on the sick list last week, is getting better. Mrs. Howard White has been on the sick list for over two weeks. A freight conductor by the name of Bell stopped at the hotel MeChermey one day last week suffering intensely with inflammation of the bowels. Dr. Moore was called who gave him some medicine, and as soon as possible he left for his home. The fast train stopped and took him away. Dan Herbster, who lived about 2 miles northwest of this place, was buried last Sunday in the Dice cemetery in Union township, St. Joseph county. He died of Bright’s disease. His funeral was preached at the big Dunkard church 3.1 miles northwest of this place, by Rev. Jacob Hilderbrand, to a very large and sympathizing audi ence. Mr. 11. was a kind husband and indulgent father. He leaves a widow ami live children to mourn their great loss, besides a large circle of other relatives and niends. His age was a little over 59 vears.
Mrs. Dr. Denniston received a telegram from South Bend last night nig ing her to go there immediately, if she desired to see her brother, (Jeorge Cross, alive. She and her son Will went there on the 111:23 Vandalia train. The Rev. I). C. Linville is at Gar rett conducting a protracted meeting. The Rev. Noah Hecter failed to fill his appointments at Claybaugh school house last Sunday on account of the sickness of his wife. The Y. P. S. C. E. of this place will celebrate Christian Endeavor day to morrow evening, by giving an entertainment at the W. M. church. Raymond Shirk, of South Bend, came here last Monday to assist his father iu invoicing bis stock of hardware. An immense amount of timber has j been hauled during this snow to Gregg’s stave and beading factory. We are sorry to have to chronicle the death of “Bob,” a sweet singer of the canary kind, at the house of Benny Snyder, about 3 miles southwest of this place. He was once the property of Mrs. Philip Gensingen. We hope she will not be overcome with grief when she reads this. The sad event took plane on Saturday night the 14tb inst. He was a good bird and is gono wliere tire good Birds go. The Rev. Dillon and wife, and Rev. . Warren and wife who are. conducting a I series of meetings at Teegarden, paid 1 Dr. Denniston and family a visit on ; last Monday.
