A Christmas Present from Dr. Talmage. Dr. Talmage, who has a genius for doing I things on a gigantic scale, recently placed the largest book order ever recorded. It , was for 100,000 beautiful Oxford Teachers’ Bibles, fresh from the Oxford University i Press of England, each Bible containing i 1,450 pages, bound in leather, Divinity Cir- । cult, gilt edges and round corners. With these 100,000 Bibles it Is the intention of i Dr Talmage to make 100,000 hearts happy by making a Christmas present to each new subscriber to Tre Christian Herald i at $2. Dr. Talmage is editor of Tee Christian Herald, which is issued every Wednesday, and it is needless to say that it is edited in h.s happiest vein. It is filled with bright pictures and every issue contains a charming piece of music contributed by Ira D. Sankey. The orders for The Christian Herald, since Da Talm age’s Christmas present was first mentioned by the press, are pouring in by mail, telegraph and express at such a tremendous rate that it is quite evident that the supply wi l give out before the end of the present month. Each one of these Bibles contains a Concordance, SubjcctIndex, 12 beautiful Colored Maps and a great quantity of information absolutely indispensable to a proper interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. The best investment of a two-dollar note is io send it to T. Dewitt Talmage, 777 to 783 Bible House. Do it to-day. A Kissing Partner. •A strange little incident occurred at the Stamfoid County Ball. The ball was held in the Assembly Rooms, and there was a great crowd at it. Toward the end of the evening “Sir Ro<er de Coverley” was started. The partner of one of the prettiest women there took the whole room by surprise, as well as his partner, by giving her a kiss. For a moment there were syrup, as of a serious scene; and there would have been but that the partner assured the husband that where he came from a dancer always at that st ge of “Sir Roger” gave his partner a kiss. The observance of this custom at Stamford, however, was near leading to a breach of the peace, and it would do so all over England, except at that pleasant spot where the kissing stranger resides, and should certainly be tempted to remain. On St. Sylvester’s evening in Germany, as the clock strikes twelve every gentleman has the privilege of kissing his partner. The custom being known, there are diplomatic arrangements made in advance as to who shall be partners. A Dangerous Deadlock Occurs when the sicvo-like action of the kidneys is interrupted, and they partially cease to secrete from the blood those impurities for | the escape of which they are such important channels. Bright's disease, diabetes, suppression of the urine, and weakness and inaction of the bladder —these are complaints to the relief of which Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is admirably adapted. These ailments unchecked are very formidable, and the utility of a recourse to this fine remedy and preventive cannot be pleaded with too much insistence. The Bitters is likewise efficacious in an incomparable degree for malaria, indigestion, costiveness, rheumatism and debility. In neuralgia it has also proved Itself a sovereign medium of relief. Perfectly Satisfied. The following item appeared in an Independence (Mo.) newspaper: "A prominent citizen of this county, an exmember of tbo T ~~1-’ ■ • . „„„„„ twenty-tour years a justice or the peace, came to this city recently and inquired for a bank. V hen introduced to the cashier he counted out SI,BOO, whi h represented his life-time savings, t.xdi the statement that for thirty years he had kept his savings in the clock, and it was now too bulky, and he desired to try the bank, provided they would give bond. He was satisfied of the safety of his funds and departed happy.”—American Banker. Deafness Cannot Bo Cured By local applications, as they cannot reach th) diseased portion of the ear. Tnsro is only one way to cure Deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or Imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tuba restored to its nonml I condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; : nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, I which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.' We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case Os Deafness (caused by Catarrh) that cannot be cured by taking Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free. F. J. We, as well as the Europeans, sit with hats off in houses of worsh p, while the Turks consider the uncovering of the head an indecent familiarity, and doubtless the Hebrew custom of wear- , ing hats in the synagogue is an Orien- | tai law. : A well-known German naturalist, I i Dr. Sauermann, has published a number j j of curious observations on the artiii- | cial coloration of .canary birds fed with cayenne pepper. The plumage changes from yellow to red. The peppt r contains an oily natter and an irritating principle, and when these are extracted by maceration the pepper loses its coloring property, but if olive oil be added to the macerated pepper, its coloring property returns. White hens treated | in the same way also become reddish, : and the yelks of their eggs become a j bright red. A Mammoth Competition. Baa—w mwik wcj hw aw wsiwfwtyffKF The American Horse. An American breeder has bought for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars Ormonde, the most famous English sire of running horses. The sale shows that the demand for racehorses is greater in the United States than it is in England, and that the future home of the fast . horse is in this country. Kentucky has already produced a distinctive strain, California will add another. The speed of a racehorse depends not upon his legs, but upon his lungs. If his lungs are large, capacious, in good working order, and his heart sends the blood to them, eo that they purify it perfectly, Lis logs will carry him all right. All people anl all animals who undergo great exertion fail first at the lungs and then at the heart. This shows us how important these organs are, and it also shows us how dangerous a thing it is to allow a cold to settle upon the lungs or the kidneys, for cold affects both of these organs. When you take a cold get a Lottie of Reid’s German Cough and Kidney Cure and take it freely. You will feel the beneficial effect with the very first dose, and each succeeding one will aid you more an 1 more. Get this great rorn^ edy c f any dealer.
