Whithey and Mr. Whaler, who recently started the “board of trade” at South Bend, have been arrested for alleged embezzlement, by a number of the investors, who claim they have been swindled. The 50th anniversary of the founding of Notre Dame university was quietly celebrated last Sunday. The venerable founder of that great institution of learning, Very Rev. Father Sorin, and Archbishop Riordan addressed the students and a most happy event was enjoyed by all. After two weeks of the hardest legal fight ever known in the St. Joseph circuit court the Reynolds' will case was ended last Saturday evening, resulting in the breaking of the will and a verdict in behalf of the plaintiffs. It was found that Hon. John Reynolds, the testator, was a mono-maniac on making wills, and was unduly influenced against his relatives by certain ones. The town of Wakarusa, Elkhart county, since it has the new railroad, is enjoying a veritable boom. The Goshen News says: “Vacant lots in Wakarusa are selling from SSOO to SI,OOO and the populace has gone wild. Rents are rapidly advancing and dwelling houses and business rooms are scarce at any price. It is estimated that forty business buildings and 100 residences will be erected next season in that village.” Dr. Chas. Fanola, the Indian doctor, seems to get into trouble nearly everywhere he goes. He is built that way and can’t help it. The following is from the Goshen News: “Dr. Charles Fanola, who travels at the head of a Kickapoo medicine company, was in town this week with his luxuriant growth of hair. It will be remembered that the Wakarusa correspondent of The News the other day gave the Doctor a personal notice, to the effect that he had been sued in the justice court by the orchestra of the village. The Doctor’s visit here was in answer to a writ of capias issued on a judgement in favor of J. A. Whitmer and others, on the grounds that the bill was unpaid and the Doctor was about to leave the state. The writ came to Sheriff Crull and the Doctor presented himself to be locked up, but the sheriff declined to receive him. Dr. Fanola now says his Wakarusa persecutors will have to answer to a suit for damages.”

Dr. Denaut, whose native country is Canada, is of the opinion that the majority of the people of that country are strongly in favor of annexation to the United States. The people of Canada, he says, are a little bit careful about expressing themselves publicly there upon this question, but there is, at the same time, a strong under-current in favor of annexation.
