TO ALL INTERESTED IN OUR SCHOOLS Something About Schools. SCHOOL STUDIES. PART Vll—Something— ye S , nn j a great deal—has been said about what children should study. It j 8 ensi i y seen that a child can not work in a book that he can not understand, and something of which he can form no idea as to its meaning or use. Suppose for instance we should send a six year-old to school with such studies as Algebra and Geometry; it would simply be ridiculous in the extreme. Now there is anotner method of becoming almost as ridiculous, and it is a great hindrance tp the teacher and the very destruction of the pupil when it is practiced. We often hear parents complain that their
children don’t get through their books fast enough. They wjsh to crowd their children’s capacities, to such an extent that, the children are completely bewildered. They would like for thpir boy or girl to start in on the “chart” at the age of six, and by tl } e end ot the first term, expect him to come put ready for the ’Third reader ami frac tions in arithmetic, and they either think their chjld is capable of this or else that the teacher has such a forcing capacity, as to comped the- pupil to do so much in short n time, whether it be in the pupil to accept it, and con-
I ceive its value or not'. Not all are so eager, pardon me for , assuming as much, but mam are f t rj too many, and if the f. mho cun not ' promote the pupils, conscientiously as l=e secs their needs, I have often known patrons to send their children to school •
with other books and try to comp. J the teacher to aJiow their use, wh. n the knowlego of the pupil would be sap - low that stamlurd which would aliow °t his evenl thinking of taking such a step, and it seems to tno that no CPn . scientious teacher who knows the dom age it would be to such pupils v.n .i.i i never allow such self promotion, vet । many do, iu order (they tell us) to keep
<lown ill feelings on the part of the patrons . I have jtlso known patrons ‘to keep their children at home for the reason that the teacher would not obev । in this respect, but I honor that teaeh'er whom nothing can daunt, nor any ganger or loss of approbation cun in'ducehuM to swerve from that path < )f duty, which he conscientiously thinks is right. It will do no good to compel a child to do more than he is able. Always give him such work as his mind has the power to grasp and digest so as T.i.„ lv_. to make that knowledge, so far a* it
goes, a part of himself. Let teachers le^m to “mako haste slowly." in the matter of education. An injury done in overtaxing the mind is seldom repaired. AYo^k that is too difficult, only worries the pupils’ minds and they become disgusted because at every turn and on every page they come t<> something still harder, and what is more they have never had any work similar but easier that would Lad up to this. I beard one of our state professors say that if a child in the third leader could uot read, spell and write a fair hand, it was not very likely iiwould ever become very good in any I those three branches of study, and 1 am inclined to think that he knew whereof he spoke. In my opinion, if a
pupil is not a fair leader before he enters the fourth reader, he will n t make himself a reader iu the fourth; aLo I think the fourth as difficult a reader as we need iu our common schools, lor ; there are very fc-w teachers, indeed. ' who can read all the selections of any fourth reader properly, and the pupils that master it, are fewer still. When we speak of a fair reader, we also infer that whoever deserves that name must needs be a fair speller also, for unless he is a fair speller his reading can only be poor. Spelling, reading and writing should always and in aR eases go hand in-hand. By a Teacher. Spot cash fox job printing is the rule at this office.

With the ease ami rapidity of access of our times and the probability p f ra .
