T.a Grippe. On December 19,1 was confined to my room with the Grippe. The Treasurer of the “Commercial Advertiser” recommended that I should try a bottle of “Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral,” as it had - cured him of the same complaint. I sent for a bottle, and in two days I was able to resume my business, and am now entirely cured. As I took no other remedy, I can but give all the credit to the “Cherry Pey toral,” which I gratefully recommend & a speedy specific for this disease. Yours very truly, F. T. I AN INTERESTING SPIDER. I • Ho Shows nttnself .Equal to All Emer- ; genc.rs. I encountered a rather interesting spider one August day of last summer. Net knowing his name, all I can do in the way of enlightening the reader as to his family is to state that I understand that when a spider is phenomenally developed as to abdomen he is taken to be one of the Epeira; and if it be true, this one was unquestionably of that very distinguishable tribe. He was dark brown in color, and byway of ornament had upon his back a square patch bordered round the edges with two narrow lines of white. The interior of this square was of a brilliant crimson, and the I effect of the whole was that of apiece of embroidered silk plush stitched ; upon the middle of the back of a | wine-colored coat. When 1 saw him he had within a very brief time fast- | ened long cables between some twigs ; and the pillar of a porch, in a very sunny and insect-haunted corner of | the premises. Precisely how he got them stretched as they were it would ■ be impossible to tell, but the convey- | ing of the first bridge-cable across the rapids at Niagara was nothing to it. lie was at the moment of my observing him, engager in running the spiral lines. They were attached to the spokes at distances so invariably equal that it would have required a nicromcter with which to distinguish any difference. lie worked very rapidly and traveled invariably round the web ! from left to right. He was so greatly disproportlowed to the size of his cables that it was as though an average man should hang in mid-air by a thread, yet the structure did not j sway. It is one of the standing problems, as yet unexplained, how ; Bhat strange substance which is now a liquid in an insect’s body should a i moment after be a silver cable as pliable as what it is—gossamer—as light as air, and almost as strong as i steel. There are no knots and clumsy splices.no loose ends, no miscaleulab d gaggings that must be tightened ‘ afterwards. Wherever the peaked end of the ridiculous abdomen touched I a connection there the line stayed with a magical weld. It was all i straight, all drawn evenly, all elastic and strong. When he had almost reached the center 1 saw him pause suddenly and look off toward the extreme edge of his net. A big lly was there, fa.-tnnd struggling, havingju-d blundered into the new snare not yet down on the charts. This spider watched him one moment, and then took up a thread leading directly to him by the tip of his members. He slackened it. and then gave it a sudden and most vicious jerk. The effect was to inextricably entangle thedistant lly. He t hen ran j out to him on the under side of a cable, gave him a single touch with — - : ■ ,■ ■
I fast to the web, and then goon will | his weaving. -Janus StHe. in Bel- ! i ford's Mi in t lily. 1.l to - s b <> r t n,Occupations, One of the curious features of modern life is the extent to which the most hazardous trades are overrun by applicants for work. The electric light companies never tind any diniculty in obtaining all the linemen they need, notwithstanding the fact i that the dangers of that kind of business have been demonstrated times without number. The men work in factories, says the American Medical Journal, where wall paper is made, frequently joke one another over the tradition that a man’s life is shortened ten years. A similar Ixdief is prevalent in factories where leather papers are made, and among men who have to handle them ami whose lungs are said to become imjx'ded by inI baling the dust arising from such papers. In certain other factories where brass ornaments and fittings an? made the air is laden with very tine brazen particles which are. when inhaled, especially irritating to the lungs. But one of the most singular i advertised calls for employes that, was I ever printed irppeared in a Omnecti- ' i cut newspaper, signed by a firm engaged in the business of building towers. It called applicants only i from among those who were young, | strong and courageous, and closed by saying: “We warn all seekers for this job that it is of the most dangerous nature, and that few men continue in it mo.re than a few years. In fact, it is almost c wtain death to the workman who follows this occultation.” Ruben stein's Circumstances. Mr. Rubenstein the other day paid a flying visit to Paris en route for Milan, where he is now in negotiation, dit-on, for the production of • one of his operas at the Scala. Meanwhile a project is on foot in Paris, under the auspices of the Vicomtesse i de Grefulhe and other leaders of so- [ ciety, for the production of M. Rubinj stein’s opera, “Le Demon,” by a Russian troupe at the Eden Theatre, the vast stage of which would afford a fitting frame for the elaborate mise cn scene required by the composition. There is something very iwithetic about Rubinstein’s present circumstances. Latterly the great maestro has entirely given up to his wife and to his two sons his magnificent residence of PeterhoC, and has made Dresden his headquarters. There he lives in a modest, almost shabbily furnished, apartment. If ever he cared for the pomp and vanity of the world lie has ceased to do so now’. The cataract from which he has long suffered has recently much increased, and threatens before long to deprive him entirely of his sight.—Pall Mall Gazette
Else in North Carolina. The Rev. Dr. Charles H. Hall, of Brooklyn, told a story the other evening illustrative of life in North Carolina. He < said: i “I was seated beside the coach driver, riding along a mountain road, when the driver pointed to a place on the valley road some distance below, and observed: “ ‘Man shot down there last night.’ “ ‘ Yes,’ I replied. ‘ What had he done?’ “ ‘ Revenue officer,’ was the reply. “ ‘ But what did they shoot him for? ’ I asked again. “‘Revenue officer,’ he replied again. “ ‘ Yes, yes,’ I said, thinking he had misunderstood my question, ‘ but what crime had he committed that he should be shot for it? ’ “ ‘ Why, hain’t I jest told ye?‘ my friend sharply replied. ‘He was a revenue officer; that was enough, wasn’t it? And there’s another man down there with a rifle a-lookin’ for the next one that comes along.’ ” —New York Times. Here It Is. To the man who labors with his hands, physical trouble is a very serious thing. It is not merely the pain he endures, racking and tormenting as it is, but the prospective loss of time, money, and place haunts him ■ and aggravates his suffering. He is bent on having prompt relief and sure cure. He wants the best and the proof, and herelbls: —Mr. IV. H. Schroeder, Gilbertville, lowa, stated, April 10, 1884, that ho had used St. Jacobs Oil in his stables for horse complaints and upon himself for rheumatism, and had found it the best remedy he had ever tried. Again, February 11, 1887, ho writes: «I have used St. Jacobs OU for rheumatism and sore back, as stated, and It cured; and for burns and bruises it dees its work as recommended to da I always keep it in the house and recommend It to my neighbors.”—Mr. John Ghrbutt, 656 Minna St., San Francisco, Cal., writes: “Some time back I sprained my knee and suffered agony until I tried St. Jacobs OU. The result was a speedy and permanent cure.”—Miss Ida M. Fleming. 7 S. Carey St., Baltimore, Md., says: “I had been afflicted for two years with neuralgia, and tried every moans to get rid of the tormenting disease. I had been given so much qulnlrfo that my nervous system was serlo’uslj' injured. I was advised to use St. Jacobs Oil, which I did, and it relieved me entirely.” The General Employment of Alcohol. Dr. J. Mortimer Grandville, an eminent English physician, has recently made an address on what he terms the Illogical character of teetotalism. While saying that he did not in any way wish to encourage excessive drinking he wished to expose the entirely unscientific theory upon which total abstinence is based; that is, the notion that alcohol I was necessarily injurious to the human ' system. He said that the physiology ; upon which teetotalers regaled themselves was taken from lecturers who know nothing about the subject. No nan ’ could pretend that he was ihi absolute abstainer unless he Also affirmed th it he was starving himself to death. If he , took bread, water, and other forms of food, alcohol was developed by the ordinary fermentations of nature, and ■ hence, teetotalers, who were largo cou--1 Burners of food, were a! o considerable consumers of self-generated alcohol. Pearl Fishing In the Indian Ocean. In order that all may fare alike, the work begins at a given signal. Hundreds of divers, ready witji their baskets, sinking stones and ropes, plunge into the sea at once, to shortly reappear breathless, but with their baskets filled with the coveted mollusks. Then another set descend in the same way, each boat having several diving crews. Os course, such unpleasant attendants as sharks are to be avoided if possible, and, on the whole, there is a good deal of risk, but then, pearls are pearls, and worth it, I suppose. Three-fourths of the catch belongs to the government, and the rest to the workers. When the cargo is landed, the colony disposes of its share in lots of a thousand at auction. This, of course, brings an assured revenue. The profits of the purchaser are purely speculative. A hundred mollusks may prove valueless, or one may contain two or three gems, as evil or good fortune is with the purchaser. The mollusks are allowed to putrefy in the sun, and are then washed to extract the jewels. During all this handling, the owner is obliged to use the strictest vigilance to prevent the native workmen from purloining his choicest gems.—Great Divide. Russia’s Trafle In Geese. Live geese are exported from Russia to Germany and Austria in very largo numbers. An export house of Warsaw intends building special cars for the transportation of geese directly to their places of destination it’ the railroad managers will grant them permission to run the cars. The Ministry on Roads of Intercommunication was notified of the proposal of that flrm, and its favorable decision is expected. The cars are to be constructed with appliances to change from the broad gauge of the Russian lines to the narrow gauge of the German roads without loss of time. The Ladles. CHICAGO. Chicago has captured the Democratic national convention in spite of the fact that nine other cities wanted it. This speaks volumes for the advantages which Chicago offers. It gained it largely because the delegates thought that that city contains more hotel accommodations than any other. Chicago is an example of what persistent energy will do. This is illustrated in Retd's Germ an Cough and Kidney Cure, a remedy that only needs to be used in order to recommend itself. It will cure the worst description of lung trouble or kidney complaint.
