No other medicine so effectually CURES Scrofula, boils, pimples, rheumatism, catarrh. am! all other blood diseases. “There can be no question as to the superiority of Ayer's Sarsaparilla over all other blood-purifiers. If this was not the case, the demand for it, instead of increasing yearly, would have ceased long ago,’like so many other blood medicines I could name.”— F. L- Nickerson. Druggist, 75 Chelsea st., Charlestown. Mass. “ Two years ago I was troubled with saltrheumf It was all over my body- and nothing the doctors did for me w is of any avail. At last I took four bottles of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, and was completely cured, lean sincerely recommend it as a splendid blood-purifier.’’—J. S. Burt, Upper Keswick, New Brunswick. ' “My sister was afflicted with a severe case of SCROFULA Our doctor recommended Ayer’s Sarsaparilla as being the best blood blood-purifier within his experience. We gave her this medicine, and a complete cure was the result.” — Wm. O.' Jenkins, Deweese. Neb. “When a boy I was troubled with a blood disease which manifested itself in sores on the legs. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla being recommended, I took a number of bottles, and was cured. 1 have never since that time had a recurrence of the complaint.” —J. C. Thompson, Lowell, Mass. “ I was cured of Scrofula by the use of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. ”•-John C. Berry, Deerfield, Mo. Ayer’s Sarsapaii^a Prepared by Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co., Lowell, Maas. No man or woman now living will ever date a I document without using the figure 9. It stands in the third place in 1890, where it will remain ten years and then move up to second place in 1900, where it will rest for one hundred years. There is another “9” which has also come to stay. It is unlike the figure 9 in our dates in the respect that it has already moved up to first place, where it will permane y remain. It is called the “No. 9“ High Arm Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machine. The “No. 9” was endorsed for first place by the experts of Europe at the Paris Exposition of 1889, Where, after a severecontest with the leading machines of the world, it was awarded the only Grand Prize given to family sewing machines, ail others on exhibit having received lower awards of gold medals, etc. The French Government also recognized its superiority by the decoration of Mr. Nathaniel Wheeler, President of the company, with the Cross of the Legion of Honor. The “No. 9" is not an old machine improved upon, but is an entirely new machine, and the Grand Prize at Paris was awarded it as the grandest advance in sewing machine mechanism of the age Those who buy it can rest assured, therefore, of having the very latest and best. Over in Macy the other Sunday a minister in looking over the congregation in the midst of his sermon was ; horrified to see his son in the gallery 'pelting the hearers in the pews below with peanuts. While the good man was preparing a frown of reproof the young hopeful cried out: “You tend to your preaching, dad; I'll keep ’em awake.” A newspaper man can say nice and pleasant things about a man and his family for two long years, and then incur tUeir lifelong enmity in one short week by a seeming slight. Yes, it’s a i fact, and you can hurrah for a candidate back his friends, cuss his enemies, and make a darn fool of yourself all ’’’e way through, without a thank in the end, to find that when you are a candidate, that he is “out of polities.” But there’s one man that don't forget you, and that's the mau you opposed.—Exchange. While in Wakarusa last Friday we learned some postal news that is a little interesting. Mr. Melvin is the post master there, and by the way, a democrat. By some contrivance Mr. D. V. Use on a TJghtship. [ The routine of work on a lightship ■ is quite simple. At suriso the watch 1 lowers the lights. A six a. ni. the | captain or the mate stands in the door- ' : way leading from the cabin into the! I berth deck and shouts, “Ail hands!” ’ The men tumble out of their bunks' and dress, breakfast being served at. J twenty minutes past six. At half past : seven the lamps are removed from the ' lanterns and taken below to be cleaned I and tilled. In smooth weather this duty can bo performed in about two ; hours, lint if the vessel is rolling and i pitching the task may be prolonged an hour or two. IV hen the lamps have I been returned to (he lanterns there ' remains nothing for the crew to do except to clean ship and to go on watch until sundown when the lamps are lighted and the lanterns hoisted. The crew is divided into the captain’s watch and the mate’s watch of live each. Twice between spring ami winter each watch goes ashore for two months, so that each member of the crew is aboard the lightship eight months in ] the year. It is not believed that they , could stand the life longer than this. ! In fact many men throw up their work as soon as they can get ashore. Three members of the South Shoal crew have, however, seen unusuallyj long terms of service—twenty-one, I nineteen, and seventeen years respect-4 ively. and others havo served on her m remarkably long time when the deso3 late character of the service is considered. This is probably due to the fact I that the dangers of this exposed station warn off all but those inured to the hardships of a seafaring life. The men who have been there so long are old whalemen, accustomed to voyages of several years’ duration and to the perils of a whaleman’s life. The pay aboard the South Shoal is somewhat higher than on other lightships. The captain receives §I,OOO. tint male S7OO and the crew SGOO. These sums may not seem large, but it must be borne in mind that even the prodigal son would have found it impossible to make away with his patrimony on the South Shoal Lightship, especially as the Government furnishes all supplies Opportunities for extravagance are absolute!}’ wanting. Oveisionally a member of the crew may remark in a sadly jocose tone that he is g”iug around the corner to order a case oi .champagne or to be measured for a dress suit; but there is no corner.— Gustav Kobbi. tn the Cntury. Sleep in Sickness. Concerning sleep,in connection with sickness, there is a good deal of heresy regarding ihc matter, among otherwise well-informed people. “Don’t ; let her sleep too long!’’ •Be sure to wake him when it is time to give the , medicine; it will boa great deal better for him not to sleep too long at. one lime! ’ How often we have heard these ■jr-urds, or words to that effect, when in Wp.ct, in nine eases out of ten, and very W’kely in ninety-nine out of the hun■^"ed, they were the exact opposite of U'e truth. Geutlo. restful sleep is better than any medicine; ami Low often, pven how almost invariably, does the “change for the better” for which anxious friends are waiting so prayerfully, come during sleep—making its first manifestation when the patient awakes with brightened eye, stronger voice, a faint tinge of returning health mantling the features, in place of (he wan hue of threatening death! In the words of Sancho Panza, we may well say, “Blessed be the man who invented sleep!” There are, of course, critical situations in which a troubled, imperfect sleep may property be broken to administer medicines; but in those later days physicians, quite J generally, give the c oition that in case of restful sleep the patient is not to be awakened f<>r the administering of medicines. — Good Jluus< l,’c< pin /■
