Miss Sadip Haines, of Ligonier drowned herself in the Elkhart river at that place the other day. She is said to h ive been of easy virtue. Iler mother is a bnd woman, and her brother trim! to kill himself by taking paris green. An old maid at Goshen gave a tramp a stale slice of bread thinner than charity, remarking: “I don't give you this for your sake, bnt for Christ’s sake.” ‘'l'hen for God’s sale,” sai l the tramp, “spread the butter on it thick enough lor him to detect it with his all-seeing eye.”-—Ex. A dam is a small brass coin used in Persia and India, and is equal to one cent of our money. In speaking of the insignificant worth of a thingyou might just as well say it is not worth a dam as to say it is not worth a cent, for the words mean the same. The distinction heretofore made doesn't amount to a d im. It is tautology to say a thing isn’t worth a dam cent. 'lhe latest developments in thesnpP^sed fiendish murder of Alexander Snyder, an old citizen of Goshen, last Sunday morning, show that his death was caused by rats. The old man fell on the 11 >or in a stupor and the rats at tacked him. tearing off the flesh and mutilating his face shockingly. From this the officers originated the theory that tramps had clubbed the old gentleman to death.— Mishawaka Enterprise. Had the tormented rats been a little more careful about mutilating the old gentleman so badly, circumstantial evidence might easily have been con jured up to warranted a first class hanging of one or two anyhow. The treasui" department notifies dealers in liquor that the $25 collected by the United States government is a tax and not the payment for a license. This tax does not exempt the —lmLler l _as has been cLungad, fn>m any penalty or punishment provided for •by the laws of any state for carrying on the business within such state, and dosen’t authorize the commencement or continuance of such business contrary to the laws of such state or in places prohibited by municipal law. Thus it will be seen that no person can legally retail liquor under what is termed a “government license,” which is in re ality nothing more nor less than a tax. —Michigan City Appeal.
