U TARCMARISIS 1A OB AT TT R O T AT TO, Milled &t Rast. Kemmler, the man about whom the authorities have been so busy in arranging to kill at Auburn, New York, for a year past or more, was killed in tho state prison in Auburn last Wednesday moruing. Ileetricity was the means employed. The miserable wrelch, according to newspaper accounts, died a horrible death. It is deseribed as having Dbeen simply appalling to the spectators, about 25 in number, one of whom, G. G. Bain, of Washington, D. C., fainted. Kemmler's crime was that of killing another man’s wife, with whom he bad eloped from Philadelphia to Buflfalo, New York, and who were living together as man and wife. Some time ago if one opposed to capital punishment would call an execution upon the gallows “killing,” those favoring capital punishment, newspapers and all, would hold up their hands in holy horror and vehemently condemn such language. You were admonished to say “Hang,” not kill. This paper was scored right and left for saying the authorities “killed” the anarchists, and was repeatedly warned tosay “hanged.” Hangedf we'll doit. The great big papers, the little papers, and the people have at last with one accord como right down to Dbusiness and eall the killing of an individual by its right name—“kill.” The killing match at Anburn last Wednesday is condemned by three loading Loudon, England, papers, and by thousands of others of less note, just as it should be. The great state of New York is ashamed of the brutal act, just us it should be, It is a disgrace to this country, and this country to-day is ashamed of it, just as it should be. It is a disgrace to any country to pursue the practices of barbarians. There is a more humane way to satisfy the law, and a safer way, than to brutally kill men and women, and several of our states recognize the fact. A brave man thinks no one his superior who does him au infury; for he has it then in his power to make himself superior to the other by forgiving it. —Pope. | That we may prove {to you fellows -who have failedito dothe fair thing with ‘us, that we are your superiors by a big majority, and brave, too, we now forgive you. ORI §TR W The word “remove,” which Guiteau persisted inusing in referring to his killing of Garfield, did not have the effect of lessening the magnitude of his crime, neither did it modify his sentence—neither does the smooth, slick little word “execute,” so persistently employed by the advoeates of legal killing, modify the horribleness of the unwarrantable proceedure. This paper is just about tickled to death to sce that the great Chicago Inter ‘Ocean has practically acknowledged that it is down on ecapital punishment | , with both feet. ¥or popularity it bolstered up the legal killitg of the anarchists, but it has got ashamed of itself and blushingly anuounces to the world that killing men and women, legally or otherwise, isnot the proper caper.
