W. A. ENDLEY, PpBI.tsHKK. WALKERTON, IND, FEB. 23, 1889. Indiana has a debt of about goven pillion dollars. Tlio public debt was reduced during flic month of January $12,218,285. Indianapolis may have the G. A. R. national encampment in 1890, as efforts gyp bejug made to that end. ICS .xv r*«r" Senator DeMotto; of Valparaiso, is talked of for Department Commander pf the Statu of Indiana, G. A. R. Ftdo rvx esti-jna-—in Dr. IT. Z. Leonard, of Logansport, who spoke Imre during the last campaign, wants to be minister to China under tip; Hq’ risen administration. A bill to allow teachers pay for attending township institutes passed the lower house of the state legislature several days ago by an almost unanimous vote. Fyionds of the measure feel sure that the senate will ooneur, thus relieving teachers of a long-continued impo- • sition LT ?. TM 9Jt(irn The LaPorte Herald favors the appointment of Major Calkins for Secretary of War. It would be very gratifying to the Major’s hosts of friends throughout the state to see him honored with a place iq President Harrison's cabinet. As to qualifications for the office of Secretary of War it is doubtful whether a better mail than the Major pouJ4 he found in the state. K xwnmw—wvuv — Railroad men will be glad io know that a bill making railroad companies responsible for injuries to employes even when such injuries are the result of carelessness of other employes, lias been passed by the house. Under the present Jaw many injured firemen or brakemen have failed to recover any ffamagep because the .courts would prove that their injuries were caused by the parelessness of the engineer or other employe. Such injustice cannot be yighted too soon. Another plan for draining the Kankakee marshes is talked of with oonsidprable enthusiasm hy interested persons. It is not a now scheme; it js one which was agitated years ago, before the Michigan Cjty harbor h»d been ponatnmtedf It is this: to construct a ganal from the Kankakee in Porter ponuty directly to Lake Michigan, the distance being only about twentydwo miles It is assumed that this canal would drain the marshes and at the pame time be much cheaper than bjasHng the rock at Momeime, Hi., ami would also make another lake harbor for Indiana. WEALTHY HUMORISTS. A floating newspaper paragraph mentions Mark Twain as the richest of American humorists. This question of riches was discussed by Mr. Howells jn Harper’s recently, and Joel Chandler Harris, of the Atlanta Constitution, was set dqwn as the wealthiest humorist in the country. The wealth pf American Jiumorists is quoted as follows: Joel Chandler Harris ,^,000,000 Mark Twain : • 1,200,000 Eli Perkins.. 150,000 George W. Peek. : . 150,000 Edgar William Nyp : ,• • 100,000 Charles B. L ew i®-: •• • 100,00 Q E. P. Hailey (Danbury News) 75,00(1 Robert J, Burdette 30,000 The rest of the humorist writers, with, perhaps, two or three exceptions, have to struggle along on salaries. Os j the verse writers, James W’hitcomb Riiev, is said to make the most money pach year, hU^ h G saves very little, His income from his pen work and lee. jures is estimated at $20,000. Colonel John A. Cpckerill, of the New York World, is the biggest salaried managing editor in the country, but Mr. Jo^eph P. McCullagh, of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, is the richest. IlarriNonm New Carriages —XV hat They Are Elke, The commotion on Michigan avenue, mar Jackson street, yesterday afternoon was caused by tho arrival in town of two carriages designed for the especial use of Gon. Harrison, our prospective president. Between 3 and 1 o’, clock two large trucks halted in front of the warerooms; A nimble clerk who had bopn stationed on the curb as a Jookout slammed the front dopes and hastened to bear the tidings to the heads of the house, who were in solemn waiting within. The passers-by p moment later were startled by the sudden appearanpp in the street of a bald-headed nud slightly obese gentle? man whoso long black whiskers streamed like a besom in the wind. Behind him trooped clerks, offipe boys, helpers, workmen and roustabouts. The further intelligence that Mr. Russell B. Harrison was in the city and on his way to the offices coming in about the same time did not tend to qujet the errriage-maker’s perves. However this may be, tho precious burdens of the trucks were speedly removed and rolled into a secluded corner of tho establishment, ami thenceforth guarded from t|ie prying curosik ty of tho reporters. They are to be forwarded to Washington tho latter part of next weeK. The vehicles which have for months been elaborating in the. factories at South Bend, Ipd., are indeed beautiful exampips of thp carriage builder’s art. Ono is a full leather landau for the president’s use, plain in ap]>earance but made of the best material and finished in elegant style. Tho other is an extension-front brougham fpv Mrs. Harrison. The finish of the gearing and exterior woodwork of both carriages is a Jar K-green body, with black stpiping, and highly polished. All the trimmings, which are exceedingly plain according to the president’s wish, are of silver. The brougham is upholstered jn green cloth and satin. The lamps Up? sjlver globes of fanciful design find cuLglass panels. In tj>e fpont of the brougham is ft little seat especially for tho grandchildren. The vehicle may be tightly inclosed by wppffep blinds on the side windows. Under the drivers seat is an alarm bell attached by a wipe to a button in easy regeh of the occu pant within. The president’s landau Is likewise up- . bolstered in satin and darkrgreen cloth, The top may be thrown open by hiddpp springs thpopgh thp action of a small lover accessible tn the driver. The lamps aresquare and silvep framed. A workman has placed in each of them a little “Harrison and Protection" flag which ho carried during the campaign. Besides tlio brougham and landau, a mail buggy of similar trimmiug and finish has been made and will be pent with the other carriages to Washington, The same fl rm is also making the harness to go with the carriages. It is to be plain and substantial, adorned with silver buckles. The carriages, harness, and horse furnjtpro a re estimated to have actually cost $5,000. What Gep. Harrison pays fop the out fit is unknown, but in the open market others would probably have to pay $7,000 or SB,OOO, —Chicago News. COILNTI, Center Township. * The members of the M.
