Communications should reach us not later than Thursday evening in order to insure publication. The summer meeting of the Democratic State Editorial Association will be held at Lake Maxenkuckee, July 20, 21 and 22,and. continue three days. This meet ing promises to exceed in interest all others heretofore held by the association. Will Noyes, a young attorney of La Porte, and a nephew of Judge Noyes, died suddenly of consumption the other day. He was a young man with a bright future before him. His uge was about 23. Posters were printed at this office an nouncing a concert to be held this evening (Saturday) at Teegarden. by Miss Zehner and the singing class which is under her instruction. The entertainment'promises to be one of considerable merit. The Irene Benton Dramatic Company played to good houses Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, in Bender'.opera hall. The dramas'‘Hidden Hand," “Fanchon,” and “Therese" were presented with fair ability. The company made a good impression here. To all appearances they were nice folks. Biils printed at this office announce a public sale to be held by Adan; Baugher nt his residence in Walkerton, March 5. at 10 o'clock a. m., on which occasion 3 work horses, 2 milch cows, 2 set double harness, single, harness, 1 s>t blacksmith tools, 1 pair bob sleds, and other articles, will be sold at public vendue. The St. Joseph river has overflown and great damage is reported all along the line between South Bend and Mishawaka. Several buildings have been washed out into the river, and in order to prevent damage to bridges some of the buildings were anchored by mea^s of ropes fastened to the trees along the bank. It is claimci that the river is higher now than it was ever known to be before. Berry Thompson, of Plymouth, on last Tuesday arrested Amos Mattox, of Arkansas, formerly of Teegarden, on the road between the latter place and Tyner, for “shoving the queer." Ihe arrest was made on the strength of a requisition fom the U. S. Marshal, of Arkansas. Mattox is charged with being in league with the notorious Hungerfords in the counterfeit ing business. The U. S. Marshal 'came to Plymouth and took charge of the pris ouer returning with him to Arkansas. BARGAIN IN MUSIC. The Independent came out earlier than usmfl this week. On this accout we were compelled to cut down some of our correspondence, which came in a little late. Senator Howard, representing St. Joseph and Starke counties in the state senate, has introduced a bill which has tor its object the draining of the Kankakee valley. Next week we will publish a letter writ ten by C. R. Stone to his uncle, Dr. C. M. Richmond, giving the particulars of the assassination of his son, Homer J. Stone. It came too late for this week. “Snow broth in the gutters, • Mill ponds on the green, Everybody growling, ‘Weather mighty mean.’ Suddenly the change comes, Cold snap follows fog, Ice and cold and biting frost, Now we'll all ‘tobog.’” A swindler by the name of Griswold, of Connecticut, is sending an advertisement ; to the newspapers under the catching tiile of “Gold Watch Free to All.” If you should see such an advertisement in any of the papers don't bite. “A pretty little bonnet, Is deserving of a sonnet, For a pretty face within is a vision of delight. Last Sunday about forty of Mr. and Mrs, Henry Smith's friends and relatives met at their residence on the Island, to celebrate Henry's 30ih birthday. The day was passed in conversation and sing ing with Miss Mary Weiler, Geo. Cook and Addison Snell presiding at the or gan. After the guests had seated them selves to an excellent dinner, Mr. Smith's wile presented him with a fine silver watch and gold chain. William C. Thayer, late of the firm of Thayer A Sibley, hardware merchant-, of South Bomiß died by his own hau l al Owßsso, Mich., one dav last week. He ha I recently purchased a hardware store at Owosso, and his family, who remained at South Bend, were making preparations to go there v hen they receive! the sad intelligence. Mr. I haver was fairly successful in business, his family relations were of the most amicable character, and he was held in high esteem by all his acquaintances; but he was one of those tin fortunate men whose melancholy dispo sition rendered his life a dismal an I unhappy one. Tue conclusion arrived nt re garding his death is that he committed the fearful net while laboring under a temporary aberration of mind. Beall took a little scoot up from Pittsboro, Ind., this week, remaining here two or three days. Mrs. C. V. O'Brien returned front Milwaukee’ Wis , last Wednesday, where she had been visit, ing her husband. Aleck LaPierre came over from the Bend, on business, last Wednesday, returning home on T hursday evening. Rev. Walter Scott, pastor of the Episcopal church, LaPorte, was among the callers at the Independent ofliee, on Wednesday. Everett Young, of Disko, Wabash Co., Ind., a nephew of Mrs. J. W. Brown, of this place, died of measles on last Monday. Mrs. BroWn, Mrs. Charles Arnold, Mrs. Samuel Peffly and son Frank, all relatives of the deceased, went to Disko to attend the funeral.
