CURISTM ASTo little boys and girls who don't know as much as we do, if there are any, we wish to say that, Christmas ns the festival of the Christian Church, observed on the 25th of December of each year, in memory of the birth of Christ. And as for Santa Claus—there is no such an individual; he is only an imaginary institution. You hang up your dear little striped sox, and your Pa or Ma puts in •>. stick of candy or a peanut, and that’s all there is to this Santa Claus business. We just tell you this on the sly. Those.who desire stopping The Independent would Uttler do so before getting interested in thejhistory of Walkerton, its business men, professional men, median ics, etc., which we begin in this issue and will probably require six weeks or t* o months to complete, for once interested it will be like pulling eye teeth to give it up, and away goes seventy five cents that could be judiciously laid out lor beer ami several fine, plain drunks thereby secured. We expect to close this history with an autobiographical sketch of ourself, which, ■throughout its ’entire pages, will appear full and complete accounts of ithrilliug and blood freezing adventures; how we be gan our career in Walkerton as ‘-devil in the Visitor office; how we went to South Be nJ. busted; how we went to Chicago, busted; how we went to St. Louis, busted; how we came back here, probably to bust, etc.
Paste this in Your Bonnet. 1 his issue winds up the second quarter of The Independent’s career and nobody killed as yet, that is, so far as we know of. One subscriber has been lost to this paper, for, to him, an offensive position taken by us; another got a little cross on our hands, and two or three looked a little askance during the six months that we have issued it. But the Lord knows, and so do we, that it h: s been our aim from the beginning to the present, to not offend the most fastidious, and in the instances above referred to it was not dreamed of at the time the terrible language was made use of and the dangerous positions taken. However, prepossyossywotimous as these things were, we do not feel like taking back, apologizing or making any amends whatever for them. Sink or swim, live or perish, bust or flourish, those offenses shall remain unre pented for to the bitter “eend.” But laying jokes on the shelf, we are running this sheet tor the money there is in it, and we therefore want every last delinquent subscriber and everybody who owes The Independent a cent to scratch around and pay it, for we mean to have a squareup once in six months.
