Shively will speak in joint discussion at LaPorte next Tuesday, the 19th. Go to Mrs. Brown’# to get your dresses made, as her dressmaker thoroughly understands her business, and is competent to please. The Walkerton cemetery, Which has been in a rather neglected condition, has been cleared of rubbish and materially improved. Doctor pud Reynolds raised a hill of corn containing six stocks and twenty two fully developed ears. Now let the good farmersawhile. A couple of ladjes in Walkerton went out walking last Bunday and saw twentyseven snakes. Os course they both ecreamed twenty-seven times. The sun rose this morning at 6 o'clock, and 13. minutes, and will set this evening at a o'clock and 19 minutes, making the day's lepgti 11 hours and 6 minutes. The town board met in called session on laslTueefay evening, for the purpose ol the regular routine of business, which had been omitted at the last regular meeting. President Leslie in the chair. The Mutual Life and Accident Insurance Association, of South Bend, promptly paid John W. Stroup ten -dollars for a alight injury incurred by him. That com pany makes prompt payment in merito rious cases. The Mishawaka Enterprise, in its last issue, laments pitiably over the birth of two bastards in that place recently. Why should the Enterprise moan so long as the 'citizens of that pious, virtuous town furnish rich, racy and fresh news items? Last Saturday was a lively day in Walkerton. Every available spot was occupied by teams. The sidewalks were rendered •almost impassable, so dense was the throng of people which IBerally lined the walks Ammo one end of town to the other. We now have in our new stock of stoves, consisting of heating and cooking stoves, both wood and coal. We have a large variety of modern styles, and at the very lowest prices. Call and examine our stock. We will take pleasure in showing you through.. S. F. Ross 4 Co. SAVED HIS LIFE. Mr. D I Wilcoxson, of Horse Cave, Ky^ says he was, for many years, badly afflicted with Phthisic, also Diabetes; the pains were almost unendurable and would sometimes almost throw hina into convulsions. He tried Electric Bitters and got relief from first bottle and after taking six bottles, was entirely cured, and had gained in flesh eighteen pounds. Says he positively believes he would have died, had it not been for the relief afforded by Electric Bitters. Sold at fifty cents a bottle by Dr. Arlington., Rev. B. H. Beall takes charge of the Methodist flock at Pittsboro, ten miles northwest of Indianapolis. He will move his family to that place during the latter part of next week, he thinks. We regret very much to lose the reverend gentleman, but suppose that he feels it an imperative duty to ?o wherever the Lord calls him, for the purpose of expounding the gospel and thus furthering the good work. May success crown his efforts is our prayer. DON’T EXPERIMENT. You cannot afford to waste time in ex perHnenting when your lungs are in danConsumption always seems at first on^ a cold. Do not permit any dealer to implose upon you with sotae cheap imitatiom of Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consuliption, Coughs and Colds, but be sure yoA get die genuine. Because he can makje more profit he may tell you he has something just as good, or just the sameD^’t be deceived, but insist upon getting | Dr ’King's New Discovery, which is guareJk. ed to give relief in all Throat, Lung uuJiCheet affections. C. W. N. Stephens has been slightly indisposed during the last past few days. It is reported that Milt Jones caught a pickerel in the Kankakee the other day that weighed 12 pounds. Remember that Tuesday evening is the time of the meeting of the Walkerton branch of the South Bend Insurance Company. Rattling good apples are selling in this market for 30 cents a bushel. Now you can see what a democratic administration will do. H. B. Darling, of LaPorte, sends a communication to the Independent this week, which will no doubt be of interest to many of our readers. Robert Milligan, a practical glovemaker, of Milwaukee, Wis., will assist J. D. Martin in the manufacture of gloves here this winter. A club dance is being organized in this place. The members of the club propose to meet every Wednesday night at Bender’s hall. John Morgan (that's a historic name, too) has moved from the country into one of Jake Giberson’s tenement houses- More tenement houses are in demand. The probabilities are that as soon as the coming election is over with and the offices filled with good, honest fellows, men will turn their attention to business and that bank will be started in Walkerton. Rules for governing the Walkerton High School were printed at this office this week. They will be framed and hung in a conspicuous place in each department of the school. A fellow brought a load of stove wood to town the other day and couldn’t sell it, and so was foolish enough to turn it out on a debt. How stupid! You should have hauled it back home. Dan Barber is rushing the graveling of the wagon road from Walkerton to Teegarden. Now let some one of equal push and dash set the ball rolling in the direction of Grovertown. G. W. I Jones and Frank Arlington have opened a music store in South Chicago. There being no other establish ment of the kind in that place, they will no doubt do a large business. The new snake crop bids fair for an unprecedented yield. Little snakes have abounded in our streets and on the side walks during the past few days. Now let some shrewd editor ask us what kind of whisky we drink. The question of extending Ninth street, it is believed, is not yet settled. There are but few, if any, who visit the present terminus of the above street, and are made to fully understand the particulars in the matter, but that say an extension of the street would be of public utility. There is a little flock of Gypsies camp ing just beyond the cemetery, some of whose permanent, home is in Washington, D. C. The female department have a fine line of fortunes which they are selling at a dollar apiece, more or less. Now is the time for the (dd maids to learn all about it, John Finch, of South Bend, Republican candidate for Sheriff of St. Joseph county, was in town and slipped in upon us last Tuesday. Finch is the same plain Finch to-morrow as he is to-day. There’s nothing vain about that man. We can’t say positively whether he'll be the next Sheriff or not. The truth is, we haven’t got the exact combination with which to unlock the mystic future. Our Catholic friends held on last Sun day, Monday and Tuesday, their Jubilee and Forty-eight Hour Devotion. There was a large turnout, and some of them expressed themselves as having had an excellent meeting. Father Crowel, of Chesterton, and Father Monach, of Plymouth, conducted the services. We are happy to be able to report so successful a meeting held by our Catholic friends. GOOD RESULTS IN EVERY CASE. D. A. Bradford, wholesale paper dealer of Chattanooga, Teun., writes that he was seriously afflicted with a severe cold that settled on his lungs; had tried many remedies without benefit. Being induced to try Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consumption, did so and was entirely cured by use of a few bottles. Since which time he has used it in his family for all Coughs and Colds with best results. This is the experience of thousands whose lives have been aved by this Wcnderful Discovery. Trial bottles free at Arlington’s drug store. AN END TO BONE SCRAPING. Edward Shepherd, of Harrisbuig, 111., says: “Having received so much benefit from Electric Bitters, I feel it my duty to let suffering humanity know it. Have had a running sore on my leg for eight years; my doctors told me I would have to have the bone scraped or leg amputated. I used, instead, three bottles of Electric Bit ters and seven boxes Bucklen’s Arnica Salve, and my leg is now sound and well. ’ Electric Bitters are sold at fifty cents a bottle, and Bucklen’s Arnica Salve at 25c. per box by Dr. Arlington. That carpet that I bought of Vincent lit my room exactly, aud so awful cheap, tool oct2 A fine line of cook and heating stoves, plain and fancy, very cheap at the Williams <fc Henderson hardware. NEW MEAT MARKET. Jacob Kettering has opened a meat market in the room recently vacated by the postoffice, and hopes to secure a fair share of the patronage of the citizens of alkerton and vicinity. At his market will always be found meats of all kinds and of the very beet quality, saussagee, balogna, etc. Give him a trial.
