Grandmother Horn, mother of Mrs. Renberger, has been very ill for some time. Miss Walterhouse, of Tyner, died on last Wednesday from malarial fever. She was 18 years of age. Born, to the wife of Wm. Johns, a son. A son was born to the wife of Ike Rine hart, last Monday. Full particulars in regard to the Chicago anarchists will be found on the outside page of this paper. Your attention is called to the “ad’ of 'Squire Uriah Ferris Townsend, justice of the peace, in another column of this paper. Some boy threw a stone the other day and broke a pane of glass in one of the new stained glass windows in the M. L. church. ‘ Mrs: Charles Granger and Mrys. Dr. Woodworth claim they felt the trembhing caused by the earthquake lasi Tuesday evening. Each of the LaPorte editors claims to tell nothing but wholesome truths, and yet each disputes positively everything the other says. ; A special train laden with Indianapolis excursionists passed through this place over the 1. P. & C,, early Sunday morning, bound for Michigan City. The sun rose this morning at 5 o'clock and 30 mihutes, and will set this evening at 6 o'clock and 28 minutes, makine the day’s length 12 hours and 58 minutes. The M. E. church will be dedicated a week from Sunday, with appropriate serv-. ices. Presiding Elder Beck and other leading men of the M. E. church will be present and deliver addresses, on the occa. sion. The festival given by the M. E. folks in Fulmer's hall, Tuesday’ evening, was a gratifying success to all concerned. The total receipts of the evening amounted to about $lO. This is the last issue that we propose to send the INDEPENDENT to certain foreign subscribers, unless we hear from them between this and the next issue. That’s straight goods. Rev Snyder has been retained by the U. B. church people, of this place, as their pastor for another year. ile will preach his first sermon for the new term at the U. B. church, Sunday evening. South Bend Register: Refore Stach on Wednesday Frank Gard aud William Augustine were acquitted of the charge of stealing water melons from Henderson Mc Clellan, of Greene township. Rev. Merrill is being strongly urged-by our citizens, both in and out of the churels to return to this place for another term as pastor of the M. E. church, and he has given his co%.m do so, subject to the approval of the M. E. conference. The pig-pens, some of them, that this paper spoke of a few weeks ago, have de veloped into full-grown hog-pens, and the hoggiest kind at that. And now the town board has got onto its ear, so to speak, and somebody's going to have trouble on their hands if they don't abate 'he nuisance. Do you observe? : Conductor Charles Taylor, who was inthe fight at Maxenkuckee bétween railroad men and an excurssion party from Mexico on July 31, and who was arrested and held in SI,OOO bonds to answer the charge of assault, was dismissed from custody at Plymouth on Wednesday. ‘The wittnesses tor the prosecution failed to indentity Mr. Taylor as the man who did the clubbing. Wertz and wife of the Milford Times, called at the INDEPENDENT oflice on last Monday. Mrs. Dr. Poffenbarger returned last Saturday from her visit with relatives in New York state. Dr.S. C. Loring moved to Sidney, xKosciusko county, Ind., on Wednesday, to practice his profession. Mrs. Callie Haberstrah, of Ligonier, has been visiting in this place with her sister, Mrs. DrDowell. Valparaiso Vidette: Frank DuCombs, of Chicago, visited a few days this week with friends here. Mrs. Blackford, of Warsaw, visited a couple days here, this week, with her sister, Mrs. Renberger. Jake Barnhart will teach school at Lakeville this fall and winter. His school commences next Monday. Dr. ¢ M. Richmond has gone to Ashtal county, Ohio; to spend three or four weeks visieing with relatives, Lawrence Hardy returred on Tuesday from Warsaw, where he was selling books for two weeks. He reports good success. Robert Kennedy and wife and Mrs. Reuben Firestone, all of LaPorte City, lowa, are in town, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Brown. B. A. Byers, Charlie Byers and John Steel, jr., represented Lincoln township at the county teachers’ institute held at Mishawaka, this week. Charlie Wisenbaugh has been touring through Ohio, establishing Jocal agents for the Eureka Fence Machine Co., for whom he is general agent. D.C. Cole of Harrisburg, Ark., favored the Indepedent with a pleasant call the fore part of this week. Mr. Cole came from Harrisburg to attend the furneral of his brother, Martin, at North Liberty, recently. J. B. Lichtenbawlter. of Milford, this state, was in town on last Wednesday, on business. Mr Lichtenbawlter 1s one of Milford's wealthiest and snost influential citizens. He was favorably impressed with Walkerton as a business point. D. A. Lehman, ot Nappanee, was in this place, on last Thursday making arrangements for the excursion to leave Nappanee on the morning of | the 15th for the eastern part of Ohio.
