THE CHRISTMAS MAIL.
Christmas in Terre Haute would not be Christmas without the holiday issue of THE MAIL, which will be issued this year on Saturday, December 17th. Last year the demand for the Christmas Mail was so large that every copy was sold within a few hours, although an extra large edition was printed. This year a still larger edition will be printed to supply the demand which is already assured, many of the The Mail's little partners having already secured a large number of extra subecribers. The paper this year will be of unusual interest, many features having been arranged for of more than ordinary interest.
The demand for reform in municipal government, as evidenced by the interesting meeting at Indianapolis of the M"unfcpal league of America will make interesting paper by ex-City Attorney Robert B. Stimson, on the needs of municipal government ia Terre Haute and the demands of a new charter for the city. No man in Terre Haute has given so much attention to this subject as Mr. Stimson, and his piactical paper will be unusually interesting.
Attorney A. M. Hlggins, who spoiled a bright newspaper man to become a lawyer, will write an article reciting his experiences during a recent trip to Mexico/ "Society Long Ago," will be a production of a series of rhymes written for a party nearly forty years ago, referring to those who were prominent in Terre Haute social circles. In addition to these special features, there will be the regular departments, Christmas stories and miscellany, and other features, all uniting to make the Christmas Mail for 1898 far superior to any ojt the proceeding issues. The merits of The Christmas Mail as an advertising medium are too well known to need extended menton here and it is hardly necces sary to add that those advertisers who fail to be represented in Christmas Mail this year are overlooking good thing. On account of the extra work necessary in printing and binding such a large edition, The Mail will go to press on Friday evening, December 18th, and will bo issued to the newsboys at noon on Saturday. I.)ecemlier 17th.
Si'AlJf's troubles do not seem to be at an end, and there is great fear of a strong uprising of the Carlists throughout that empire. Don Carlos, the pretender, Is said to have arranged a loan of 130,000,000 with which to prosecute his war of sue cession to the throne of Spaiu, pledging the Canary islands as security for the payment of the debt.
OJTI.Y two large states in the country will have Democratic governors after January 1st. They are Missouri and Texas. Texas chose a governor at the recent election Missouri didn't- All the most important states have, or will have after January 1st, Republican governors—New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Indiana, Michigan. California, Keutucky and Wisconsin.
CONIJKKSWMAN. GKOROK W. STKKI.R has formally announced his candidacy for United States senator, to succeed Seuator Turpie, and the list of candidates now includes, besides Mr. Steele. Hon. R. S. Taylor, of Fort Wayne J. Frank Hanley, of l.afayett« Frank B. Posey, of Kvansville, and Alfred J. Beveridge, of Indianapolis, with Assistant Postmaster General Perry S. Heath looming up in the background as a possibility as a compromise candidate. With such a list to select from, his dlana should be able to secure a creditable representative in the upper house of con* gress to succeed Senator Turpie, who, while he apparently does not represent the sentiment of the people on leading

questions, Is an able and learned gentleman. One thing is certain, at least, regarding the new senator, he will vote for sound money and protection, and it is nearly a lifetime since Indiana bad two such senators.
GOVERNORS were elected in twenty-one of the forty-five States this year and there will be elections for Governor in only few States next year, notably Ohio, which the Republicans carried at the late election, Iowa: which again seems securely in the Republican column Kentucky, which is again Democratic Maryland, which has a Republican Governor, but is doubtful between the parties Mississippi, in which suffrage is more restricted than in any other state, and Rhode Island, which still adheres to annual elections for Governor. With the exception of Maryland, none of these States can be regarded as close.
THE "peace treaty with Spain HAS practically been consummated, although some minor details are yet to be completed The features already agreed upon are as follows: The customary preface of treaties in the natnre of an expression of amity and of hope for perpetual peace. The relinquishment by Spain of her sovereignty over Cuba the withdrawal of the Span ish troops relinquish ment by Spain of her sovereignty oyer Porto Rico Spain's cession of the Philippines the withdrawal of the Spanish troops there payment by the United States of $20,000,000 for the Philippines the provision for the "open door" commercial policy in the Philippines
THE voting machine in use in severa cities in New York at this year's election worked very well by all accounts and justified the assertions made concerning them. There were no mistakes, the results were promptly canvassed and there was no failure in any respect of the machine, the introduction of which in other districts has been made easier by these practical experiments. An objection pre viously urged against ballot machines, that they excluded voters from complete freedom of choice, limiting them to a selection from among various candidates, appears to have been obviated by several new improvements.
All He Craved.
The proprietor of the restaurant had just Issued new advertisement intended to eqll attention to a reduction in rates. After quoting the prices of various articles to conclusively demonstrate the fact that everything was cheap ho added at the bottom of the advertisement, "Bread, butter and potatoes free."
He knows better now. If he had to do it over again, he would word it a little differently, and all because a solemn looking man came in one day and after taking his place at a table pointed to the advertisement and asked: "Is that on the square?" "Certainly," replied the waiter. "Then give me somo bread, butter and potatoes," said t*he man. "Yes, sir. What else?" asked the waiter. "Nothing el so," replied the man. "That's all that'sfree, isn't it?"—Chicago Post.

Carefully Considered.
"What," inquired the psychological student, "do you regard as the chief end of man?" "Woll," answered Mr. Blykins, "it depends on what you want the man for. If you want him to do brain work, it's his head, und if you want him to run errands It's his feet."—Washington Stnr.

TERSE HAUTE SATURDAY EVENING MAIL, DECEMBER 10, 1898.
Av Bi«*»arele Sever Diicoarteoa^ Strange as it may appear in the "Man of Blood and Iron," Bismarck could not be discourteous to people—though others were not always as considerate to him. Professor Lenbach, than whom perhaps nobody except Professor Schweninger knew Bismarck so intimately, once Ubld me: "In all the years I have known Prince Bismarck I only remember him speaking harshly on one solitary occasion. A manservant had shut the door with a bang. Bismarck rang the bell and when he appeared told the man sharply that he was to leave at the end of his month. About a quarter of an hour afterward he rang the bell again, and said in a modified voice, 'You may stay.' That was all."— Sjidney,Whitman in Harper's.
Horse Radish For Salad.
It is not generally known that a fine salad plant may be grown from horse radish in almost the same manner as barbe de capucin is grown from chicory roots. The horse radish roots are dug in late autumn and the crowns left intact. They age then buried, standing upright, in moist (not wet) earth, in a dark, warm cellar or underneath a greenhouse bench and the leaves forced as rapidly as possible. When these are about three or four inches long, they may be cut and used either singly or mixed with other plant salads. If darkness prevails during their growth, the leaves will be white and tender and will have a sweetish pungency, but if allowed to have light they will be green and tough and too strong for use as a salad* $
