OF LOCAL INTEREST.

The county commissioners have fixed the tax rate in this city for the coming year at $1.42 on each $100 on taxable property. The city council will probably fix the city rate for the coming year at $1.20, making the the total rate for city and county in this city at $2.62, the highest it has ever beeu.

George O. Dix of this city, who had the honor of winning first prize in the competition in the Indiana Law School last Hpring had the further distinction of having his prize essay, "The Right of the Land Owner to the Mineral, Oil and Natural Gas in His Land," printed in the Indiana Law Journal in a recent issue. It is pronounced by local lawyers as the best paper on that subject ever printed in Indiana law circles. Mr. Dix, who has been admitted to the practice of law in our courts, is connected with the firm of Stimson & Condit.

W. C. Hall & Co., pt prietors of the Gazette property on Fifth street, between Main and Ohio, had the distinction of being the first to pay to City Treasurer Borgstrom the amount assessed them as bene,p fits in the opening of Ohio street.

Hon. John G. Williams, of Indianapolis, has been invited to make the address to the graduating class of the High School at the commencement exercises which will be held at the Grand January 26th.

Ex-Mayor Fred A. Ross has a most valuable collection of relics pertaining to the early history of Terre Haute, including photos, papers, etc., which he has generously offered to donate to the public schools of the city. The board of trustees has accepted the offer, and will make provisions for the proper care of the donation.

The E. & T. H. people have perfected their appeal from the action of the city council and the city commissioners regarding the opening of Ohio street across their tracks. Thus far the city has taken no action regarding the retention of Robert 11. Stimson as counsel of the city in the case in the higher court, although he conducted the case of the city before the city commissioners. Mr. Stimson has been identified with the city's side of the case since its beginning before the commissioners.

The recent sale of the Logan division to the Pennsylvania people is to make no change in the management of the road. Li The Pennsylvania folks incorporated the

Terre llaute & Logausport railroad at Indianapolis this week, with a capital j/ stock of $2,000,000, but the management of the road will continue with V. T. Malott, receiver of the entire system.

The second annual meeting of tho Terre Haute Federation of Clubs began last evening at the Central Presbyteriau church, and will continue this afternoon, when the election of officers takes place. The final session will be held to*uight. The principal event of last evening's session was the address of President F. M. Stalker. Following this the members were invited to an Informal reception given by the young ladies of the Portfolio club in the basement of the church. The room was haudsotuely decorated in the national colors, and the members of the club, assisted by the president of each of

The Kidney Complexion.

The pal«, sallow, sun ken-cheeked, dis tressed-looking people you so often meet are Affected with "kidney complexion.'"

Their kidneys Are turning to a parsnipcolor. So is their complexion. They may also have indigestion, or suffer from nleeplessness, rheumatism, neuralgia. brain trouble, nervous exhaustion, and sometimes the heart acts badly.

The cause is weak, unhealthy kidneys* Usually the sufferer from kidney disease does not find out what the trouble Is until It is almost too late, because the first symptoms are so tike mild sickness that they do not think they need a medicine or a doctor until they find themselves sick lis bed.

Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root will build up and strengthen their wwik ami diseased kidneys, purify their diseased kidney-pois-ooed blood, clear their complexion and aoon they will enjoy better health.

You can get the regular *J**s at the drug store, at fifty cents and on* dollar, or you may first prove for yourself the wonderful virtoes of thin refit discovery. Swamp-Root, by sending your address to I)r. Kilmer & Co.. Binghampion, X. Y-, for a sample bottle and a book thai tells all about it, both sent to you absolutely free by mail. Henry C. Jones, for many years a prominent resident of Prairieton township, and active in business and political circles, died there yesterday morning. He was fifty seven years of age, and had lived in this county since shortly before the war, during which he was a member of the 31st Indiana volunteers. His mother and two sisters survive him, his wife having died a few years ago.

The unsightly ruins of the old opera honse, at Fourth and Main streets* will not be a menace to life much longer, as the work of clearing them away began yesterday. The opera house was destroyed by fire in July, 1896, and the walls have been permitted to stand in the present threatening condition since then.

Misses Ethel Harris and Minnie Bogard, pupils of Herman Leibing, assisted by Misses Carrie Fahr, soprano, will give a recital at Baldwin's music hall, 640 Main street, next Monday evening. -v

The Elks will bold their annual memorial service at the lodge room in the Grand Opera Honse block to-morrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Rev. Wm. Mitchell will deliver an address, there will be the usnal opening and closing ceremonies by the lodge, and the music for the occasion will be furnished by Misses Carrie Hyde, Jessie Perdue, Dan and Gabe Davis.

Prosecutor Fred Beal has moved before Judge Piety to have the indictments against the Adams Express robbers, Farden and Barnett revived, and the matter will come up for a hearing next week. It will be remembered that ex-Prosecutor Tichenor had the indictments dismissed shortly before going out of office, and this met with the disapproval of the Adams people. The latter claim they intend to prosecute the robbers to an end, but Mr. Tichenor says that it is merely a part of their scheme to frighten Farden and Barnett into disclosing where they have the stolen money concealed. The men will not be released from Michigan City prison until some time next August.

A number of Terre Haute people have not lost faith in the idea that there is oil and gas in paying quantities somewhere in this vicinity, and have interested themselves in a company organized for the purpose of drilling for oil and gas in Sugar Creek township about five miles west of the city. The company was organized by eastern capitalists, who have secured options on a large number of acres in the neighborhood of the place where the drilling will begin in a short time.
