THK longest strike on record in this country has just been declared off in Pittsburg. It was that of the flint glass blow ers' union, which lasted four years, and cost over a million dollars. Could there be a more forcible argument against strikes?

AT last a preacher has been discovered in Iowa who is in favor of Sunday news papers. A minister of Dubuque preached a sermon last Sunday in which he took advanced ground -for a preacher—in favor of Sunday papers, and called the Sunday paper a necessity.

WIIKN the new ambassador to France was presented to the president of that republic this week, he was required to make his addtess in French, although the retiring otlicial made his in English. From this new rule it may be expected that when the new minister to Spain makes his first. ap|Marance at that court he will be required to walk Spanish.

THK jubilee fetes in houor of Queen Victoria's birthday and accession to the British throne may yet be marred by grim visagvd war. The trouble in the Trans vaal has assumed such proportions that it is likely that war may break out in South Africa at any moment. Several crack British regiments have b.«en ordered to place themselves in condition to move at any moment.

TIIK senate begin the tariff debate on Monday, and if the Democrats carry out their promise to make no factious opposition to it, but. to allow a vote to be taken on it after a reasonable time is passed in discussion and in attempts at emendation, the bill ought to ln in the president's hands by the middle of July. All the favor the Republican party asks of the Democratic senators at present is th it they refrain from tactics designed simply to obstruct. The business of the entire country, as Senator Aid rich said in the owning speech on the bill, is in a state of .sus|ension awaiting the senate's action upon it.

with a weak backbone,

and a mayor of a big city with the same trouble make a poor combination for the same big city. Chicago has just learned his, though a recent decision of the United Stotes Circuit court in a suit brought, to make the city of Chicago pay for damages resulting from the riots in that city during the memorable strike of I SIM. The taxpayers of Chicago will have to foot the bill for damages, and they will regret more than ever that their votes ever elected John P. Altgeld governor of Illinois and John P. Hopkins mayor of their city, for through the inefficiency of these officials the riots ami conflagration* resulted.

SAVUIS strange in this day and generation to read of the efforts that have finally been successful in Toronto to secure the running of street cars in that city. There was a st rong sentiment against such use of the cars, and when put to a popular vote, the result in favor of the cars, and when put to a popular vote, the result in favor of the running of the running of the cars was successful by but a few hundred votes. Even after the people by popular vote had decided in favor of the Sunday cars an effort was made to enjoin their use, but this was denied by the courts. In order to get a favorable vote the owners of the street car system were compelled to promise the money taken in the first day to the city hospitals.

ANOTUKR "jtood" man has gone wrong. in the person of John Johnson, president of the State National bank at Lo«an»port, gunpowder, who was sentenced In the United State* court at Indianapolis yesterday to ten year* in the penitentiary (or stealing in the neighborhood of five hundred thousand dollar* from the depositor* and stockholders of the bank, which closed last week a* a result of hi* stealing*. ()ood time in the prison will shorten his term to seven years, and as he is a "good" man he will get all the benefits of this.

a year is pretty good

In this period of hard times, and then are a great many men who would be glad to go through the same experience for what

he has had oat of it. The full extent of Johnson's stealings has not yet become known, and the figures may ran beyond those named. It is the common belief of those who are familiar with the facts in the case that Johnson has a great deal of this money put away in a safe place where he can realize on it at the close of his term in prison.

SCHOOL, authorities can not do too much to secure the proper observance of Decoration Day, and a recent move by the school directors in Chicago is deserving of commendation as a fit example to school authorities the country over. On yesterday afternoon in every school in Chicago proper exercises were held to the memory of the patriots who assisted in the war which saved this country from wreck and ruin. Appropriateaddresses were delivered by prominent men from different ranks of life, civil, military and professional Among those who addressed the rising generation, instilling into their hearts a love of patriotism and valor, were Gen, Brooke, of the regular army, Bishop Fal lows, of the Episcopal church, and others of less prominence. If the authorities of the Grand Army of the Republic, under whose auspices the day is usually observed could secure the enactment of a law fixing the observance for the Sunday nearest the day the exercises would be much more general than they have ever been. The people generally would like to observe the day, but the rush and hurry of business life frequently deprive them of the opportunity. In this city, for instance, the ob servance of the day will no doubt be more general than it has been for many years for the very reoson that it has been fixed for Sunday, which is a general holiday.

Here is a bright woman's receipt for the preparation of a husband, that guarantees that he will be loving, faithful and devoted See that the linen in which you wrap him is nicely mended, with buttons and strings sewed on. Tie him in the matrimonial kettle by a strong silken cord called comfort, should the one called comfort, should the one called duty prove to weak. Hus bands are apt to fly out of the kettle and be burned and crusty on the edges, since, like crabs and lobsters, you have to cook them while alive. Put them on a clear, steady fire of love, neatness and cheerful ness. Set him as near the flame as seems to agree with him. If he sputters and frizzes do not be anxious, for some husbahds do this till they are quite done. Add a little sweetness in the form of kisses, but beware of mixing vinegar or pepper. A moderate amount of spices improves them, but it mu9t be used with good judgement. Do not stick sharp instruments into him to find out if he is becoming tender. Stir him gently, watching the while lest he lie too flat and close to the kettle so to become useless. You cannot fail to find out when he is done. If thus treated you will find a husband digestible, agreeing nicely with you and the children, and he will keep as long as you want him unless you become careless and set him in too cold a place.

D. H. Baldwin & Co. have decided to continue their popular sale of Pianos and Organs at Factory prices another week, in order to meet the increased demand for high-grade instruments. More Baldwin instruments are probably in use in Terre Haute than those of any other make, which is an evidence in itself that Terre Haute musicians are alive to the real merits of those popular instruments. The great success that has followed this special sale has justified Mr. Marshall, the popular manager of the Terre Haute branch, in continuing the sale. Prospective Piano or Organ purchasers will make a grave mistake if they invest any money in either before examining the fine instru nts shown at this sale and learning the extremely low prices that are being made on them. Do not fail to visit (WO Main street during the coming week if you are contemplating the purchase of a Piano or Organ. You will get the best on the market if you buy there, and get the most reasonable prices that have ever been made on first class instruments.

Sleep.

"A mail receives a certniu term of life," Nikola Tesla said receutly, "so many hours to pass on this earth—I mean hours when he is alive, awake. I do not count the hours when he is sleep ing. I do uot believe they are, strictly speaking, included in bis term of life. When a man really lives, he is dying hour by hour, but when ho sleeps he is accumulating vital forces which will make him go on living. In other words, in measuring out our dole of hours to each one of us, the great timekeeper stops his count while we are sleeping. Therefore the louger a man sleeps the louger he will remain on earth."

A Method of Measurement. "There is such a thing as becoming too much devoted to the bicycle," said the young woman thoughtfully. "I was riding with a friend of mine who demonstrated that fact." "Did she talk con tin pally about the wheel?" "No. She didn't talk about anything until I asked her if she knew what the hour was. She looked down at her cy clometer and said we'd better hurry home, as it was two miles and a quarter past dinner time."—Washington Star.

John BrownPs Ancestor.

It seems that Jobn Brown of Ossawatomie bad a narrow escape of not being born, for Wiuslow tells bow his Mayflower ancestor, Peter Browne, the carpenter, with John Goodman, wandered off in the Plymouth woods one day in January, 1631, and lost their way chasing a deer and were out all night, hearing the lions roar and almost freezing their feet. Finally, "it pleased God, from a high hill they discovered" Saquish and Clark's island in the bay, and so got back to the "rande•ous," as Winslow terms the fort on Burial hill, "faint with travel and want of victuals and almost famished with cold." Had they never come in Kansas might now be a slave state, but it was otherwise ordered.—Boston Let ter to Springfield (Mass.) Republican.

Umbrella®.

An umbrella dealer cautions against the double use for sun and rain of a rain umbrella. Silk wears, he says, as long as its oil lasts, then it splits and cracks and is gone. The sun dries out the oil, hence its harm. A folding urn brella is to be found at some of the shops which will pack in an ordinary 14 inch satchel.—New York Post

Rebecca Wilkinson, of Brownsvalley, Ind., says: "I have been in a distressed condition for three years from nervousness, weakness of the stomach, dyspepsia and indigestion until my health was gone. I had been doctoring constantly with no relief. I bought one bottle of South American Nervine, which did me more good than any $50 worth of doctoring 1 ever did in my life. I would advise every weakly person to use this valuable and lovely medicine a few bottles of it has cured me completely. I consider it the grandest medicine in the world."'
