Noe. ao and 22 South Fifth Street, Printing House Square. The Mall is sold In the city by 380 newsboys And all newsdealers, and by agent* In 30 surrounding town*.

Entered at the Poetoffloe at Terre Haute, Ind, as seoond-class matter.

SATURDAY, DEC. 7, 1805.

AT.T. true Americana, whether jingo lata or not, will say amen to the sent! mentof the new blind chaplain of the house of representatives, who says "May we be quick to resent anything like an Insult to this, our nation."

No wonder the Democrats in Chicago are in hard straits. It is announced that in the recent campaigns 1750,000 of campaign funds have been diverted from the intended purposes and used by the politicians in charge in building new houses, taking expensive trips, etc,

IT is no wonder that detective stories arouse popular interest. It is said to be a fact that in the last ten years there were 1,766 murders committed in England and Wales, and of these there were 1,094 in which no trace of the criminal was ever found strong enough to lead to his apprehension.

IF it is better IO be right than to be president, Thomas Brackett Reed, despised and condemned by all Democratic orators and organs, for hia famous rules of procedure, is to day occupying a very enviable position. The people seem to have wanted a little more of Mr. Reed and his rules.

THE zeal displayed by the members of the Indianapolis board of trade in favor of aoentennlal exposition at the capital in 1900, for which the people of the state are expected to pay, while Indian apolin reaps the benefit, reminds one of the patriotism which is for the old flag— and an appropriation. ,m.,..v.

As a result of getting up and giving his seat in a street car to a lady a man was stabbed to death in Chicago this week. It is needless to add that the man who was stabbed was a stranger in Chicago, and the murderer a resident whose soul rebelled against such a sinful violation of the oustoms prevailing there.

THE president has nominated Rufus W. Peck ham as associate Justice of the Supreme court, to fill the vacancy oaused by the death of Justice Howell E. Jackion. He is a member of the Court of Appeals of New York, and has a high reputation as a jurist. He is a brother of Wheeler H. Peck ham, whose nomination to a position on the supreme bench was defeated by the opposition of Senator Hill, beoause the appointee was a man who had opposed Mr. Hill in his polltioal aspirations. It is said, how ever, that Mr. Hill has no objection to the new justice, and that he will be confirmed. _______________

THE light that is said to be breaking in the south may be able to reveal the reason why a negro should be punished without process of law for a crime for whloh white men are allowed trials by juries of their peers. It has just been announced that the negro who was taken from prisou in Maryland recently and lynched for an infamous orime against a woman occupied a cell near a white man who had perpetrated aslmiiar orime on a young girl, and attempted another when oaptured. Yet he was allowed to rest secure in his cell, awaiting the slow action of the courts, while his less fortunate companion In crime, beoause of his color, was ljummarily taken from the authorities and lynched.

IT seems that we have not heard the last of the income tax business, for every man who paid Income tax during the war period, when lis provisions •were enforced, is likely to petition to have his tax refunded, now that the law has been declared unconstitutional. An Iowa man was the first to petition congress to refund the money taken from him during the war, when he was an officer and part of his salary was deducted to meet the Income tax assessment, He asks that this money be returned to him, and a fight will be made to secure the refunding of the money. If he meets with suooeas It will be considered a test for all others, and millions of dollar* are involved in the matter.

THOSM who have been propheoying that the president's message would be a

"jingo"

a

affrtr in the extreme have

shown that they knew nothing of what they were talking about, for it lacks everything of being jlngoish in its tone. He object* to any foreign power inereas Ing its territorial possessions on this continent by forcible meant*, but there is lacking that ringing declaration of this belief in, and his pnrpose to enforce the provisions of, the Monroe doctrine, that we were led to believe would be such ft large part of hia annual message. His expressions on the money question indicate no new knowledge on hie part, and simply rehash what he has said before on this matter. He does not think that the failure of onr present tariff law to oolleot sufficient revenue for the oonduct of the government has

,.r

anything to do with the red notion of the gold reserve, and he does not recommend, as he might, any changes in the law in order that the government, like a private oltlsen, might be prevented from spending more than it is making, if it expects to prosper. There is nothing in the present message as startling as his famous tarifi message of 1887, and it possesses the tameness that might be expected of a president who Is sending his next to the last annual messsge to a congress in which his party is in a woeful minority. It is free from all those features that have heretofore iriade It possible to coin a word to do the subjeot justioe, Clevelandesque.

"I am cured sinoe taking Hood's Sarsaparllla," is what many thousands are saying. It gives renewed vitality and vigor.

A Novo! and Enjoyable Concert. The concert to be given by the Baldwin Concert Company at the Central Presbyterian ohurch next Friday night, December 13th, is attracting muoh attention. The members of the oompany are all well known reaidents of Crawfordsville society, including Misses Maude Cowan, first soprano Marie Campbell, eeoond soprano Fannie Binford and Edna Dice, oontraltos Mae Wallace, pianist, and Mayme Wilhite, reader. Among a number of favorable press notices given this oompany the following have been selected, to show with what appreciation their performances have been given elsewhere:

A FINE ATTRACTION.

Veedersburg News: The management of the new opera house did well in 86' curing so exoellent an attraction for the opening of the place as the Baldwin Ladies' Quartette. The entertainment, while high olass in character, was one whloh all could appreciate and enjoy The quartettes, duetts and solos were all of a high order of merit, and each number was heartily enoored by the pleased and enthusiastic audience.

The recitations of Miss Wilhite deserve especial mention, also, as they were the best ever heard here.

The Baldwin Quartette will always receive a hearty welcome In Veedersburg. THB BEST OF THE COURSE.

Crawfordsville Journal: The best attraction in the Y. M. C. A. lecture course, with due respect to the other talent, was the performance given last evening by the Baldwin Ladies' Quar tette The large auditorium was crowd ed, the finest audience of the season as sembling for the event. The young ladies were enthusiastically received, and obliged to respond to the encores which each number received. The programme was one calculated to prove popular wherever presented, and the ladies were capable of presenting it In the best possible manner.

The elocutionary feature of the enter tainment was ably sustained by Miss Wilhite, who Is acknowledged an artist of high merit. Immediately, upon the conclusion of the ooncert the quartette was engaged for the next year's oourse.
