f- ITCATION OmOK. Nos. 20 and 22 South Fifth Street) if Printing House Square.* The Mall Is sold In the city by 260 newsboys and all newsdealers, and by agent* In 90 snrroandlng towns. Entered at the Postoffloe at Terre Haute, Ind., as seoond-class matter.

TERRE HAUTE, IND., APRIL 6, 1895.

CHICAGO may still claim to be ahead of New York City. While the latter has a Strong mayor, he is not Swift, like Chicago's.

"POOR old Missouri" IN evidently not as bad as she has been painted. She is the third state in the union in the matter oj building associations.

THE war may 0T» ««id Co he over. A regiment of Illinois militia will assist in the dedication of a confederate mono ment in a Chioago cemetery Pecoration day--'

A COMPANY has been incorporated to build an elevated electric freight road from New York to Chicago that will transport freight between these points In one day, where now at lea«t six days are required,

SOME one ha* augge-^wi that the n»w yacht which is to reprnnerit this country in the race wirh the Knglteb vesnel the cup be named "Trilby" because Du Maurier's woman "was fast and showed her heels to the Englishmen."

THE president can go a great way toward restoring himself and his administration in the good graces of the public if he will exhibit a little "sand" in givT ing Great Britain to iinderstand that the Monroe doctrine must be respeoted. Might does not always make right, as that overbearing government seems to assert in its aggressiveness towards Venezuela and Nicaraugua.

AN inkling of some of the surprises stored up for next year's campaign mat be gained from the announcement that in Lansing, Mich., the Republicans elected a mayor by a large plurality— not on an enforcement of the laws platform, nor on one demanding economical administration of municipal affairs—but on a free silver platform! Think of injecting a free silver platform into a municipal election!

A MINNESOTA town of gnd size has adopted an ordinance requiring all children under sixteen years of »g* to leave the streets at nine o'clock *very nightIt is said to operate very satisfactorily, and many applications are being made for oopies of the ordinance by numerous other nitleM in diffeient parts of the country. It has many points to commend it to every community, and Terre Haute could well adopt it providing there would be an effort made to enforce it.

THE development of the New South oould receive no better illustration than in the inorease in the number of newspapers, whioh are an unfailing index of the communities in which they are published. There are 27 dallies and 280 weeklies in Georgia, 26 dailies and 228 weeklies in Kentuoky, 20 dailies and 222 weeklies in Tennessee, and 52 dailies and 562 weeklies in Texas, most of them comparing favorably in appearance and oontents with those published in northern oities of corresponding size.

SENATOR FRYE, of Maine, was feeling quite well one night recently, after a down-east banquet, and this is what he promised the Republican party would do if given another ten years, control of the government: "We will place our flag on all the sens of the earth, restore the merchant marine and increase our white, strong-armed squadrons so that

Are always beautiful and acceptable, but the Olofching that we are showing and offering this season at the remarkably low prices more handsome than ever.

they will oommana vh« respect of all nations. We will annex the Hawaiian islands, fortify Pearl harbor, build the Nioarauguan canal and marr two arrest oceans. We will show people a foreign policy that is American in every fiber and hoist the American flag on whatever island we think best and no hand shall ever pull It down." There may be a touch of Jingoism Jn these remarks, but they have the right ring about them. It is likely, too, that suoh a policy, would command the respeot of all the nations of the earth, aod we would not have to wait months for an apology for an insult to our flag as in the Allianca case. Better "jingoism" like Frye's than a wishy-washy polioy like that whioh has distinguished our intercourse with foreign countries during the past year or two.
