MAN ABOUT TOWN.
It has been a subject of cotnment that Terre Haute did not manifest any pur pose to try to retain the headquarters offices of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen until very recently. One fact, explanatory of this apparent unconcern or delay, should be borne in mind. After the adjournment of the Harrisburg convention Terre Haute people were in formed that that body had adopted a resolution ordering the removal of the offices from this city. Grand Master Sargent was quoted in an interview as saying that the order was imperative. He was quoted as giving some of the reasons why the convention took this action. Inadequate banking and mail facilities were two of them. Another was that specials had been sent out from here attacking Debs. Either the grand master was greiviously misquoted then orhehassincechanged his opinion. This week he has written a letter to the Business Men's Association in which he says that the banking and mail facilities of this city are as good as afforded in any city for the purpose of the Brotherhood. As to the "specials," the fact is tbat no «aoh specials were sent from here. It iB a pity that Mr. Sargent did not make the 06*rection sooner. Terre Haute oould"1iave «et to work earlier to retaiu the headquarters if he had. Certainly no one with any self respect would think of trying to persuade the officers of an organization to violate their instructions and certainly no Terre Haute citizen felt like asking far the headquarters when by the understood meaning of the resolution of the convention the officers were, in effect, Instructed to get out of Terre Haute.
The Terre Haute liour mills are not in the combine to close down 60 days the next six months. The reports from Chicago are that a large majority of the mills will do so to the end tbat the law of supply and demand may bring higher prices for flour.
The recent transfer of what was known as the Tuell farm, north of the fair ground, by Mr. Me Keen to the Vandaifa -company has started a report that new ahops are to be constructed. The fact 1a that the land was sold to the Vatidalla before the Pennsylvania people bought the road. The legal transfer has only just been made.
In the public schools this week the children have been coughing and sneezing to snnh an extent tbat in some rooms the recitations have been interfered with. The druggists have been busy selling cough mixtures pnd remedies SOT solds. _____
A lady of this olty who Is a devoted •member of the Episcopal chnrch tells of the astonishment she caused a good Methodist by readily giving the chapter and verse of a bible quotation. The Methodisfc friend bad a vague impres•lon that Episcopalians were better in formed as to ritualistic religion than as •to the holy book and she was surprised Into making the remark: "Oh, Mrs. ia an Episcopalian and knows the -bible f"
In the advertisements of Col. Thompson's book it isannounoed tbat be is the only survivor of the legislature of 1834. -The Hon. W. H. English, who is an an tbority on the history of Indiana, was the authority for this statement. Recently Col. Thompson has learned that there is one other survivor, a Mr.
Nichols, of Hendricks county, who is past ninety years of age. The Dr. Flower and Paschal Smith -ease has caused a new sensation in Chicago. It seems thst the court quashed

the indiotment on which they were plaoed under arrest here, on a vital teohnioal objeotion. Both men had gone to Chloago and gWen bail. 8lnce then a new Indiotment was brought to the front but according to the Tribune It was not regularly, returned. Iu fact members of the grand jury made affidavits that they had not even considered it and the oourt olerk whose duty it is to sign indictments says his name on the docket was forged.
Enough is known to make a good guess as to where the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen headquarters will be located. Cleveland is the name of the city. _____
Judge White is expeeted here next week to render his decision In the Beaoh case, and the lawyers for the proseoutlon believe that he will not sustain the motion to quash the indiotment. In this eyent the trial will probably be prq: eeeded with at an early day.
s.
Evansvllle people are going to be very mad when the fact dawns on them that at no time was there any probability that the Brotherhood offices would be located in that olty.
1
There were a half dozen Terre Haute lawyers in Judge White's oourt at Rock•vilie the other day. They were appearing iu fifteen cases pending before Judge White that were taken from this oounty on a change of venue. All of which Is evidence that the lawyers believe he la both an able and just judge.
