MAN ABOUT TOWN.

In one of the newspaper criticisms of the Potter-Bellow performance at tbe Opera House It was stated that the conversation in the play was such as would not be tolerated in Terre Haute society. But Terre Haute society did not appear to be shocked when listening to it from the stage, even though Kyrle Bellew, who has been proved to have permitted a married woman to pay his laundry bill and who, according to the same criticism, cannot be excelled in "playing" the part of a "gentleman," took part in it.

Some of the farmers will not tell the truth about their corn crop because they fear the tax assessor will get after them. The crop is an enormons one. Over in Marshall tbe other day an editor said: "I don't like to make this statement to many persons for fear I might get the reputation of being the boss liar, but it is the truth that in this county we've got lots of corn that will run one hundred bushels to the acre

That was a remarkable statement cred lted to Evangelist Chapman the other night, to the effect that every preacher in this city knew that he regularly preached to hypocrites in his church. If so, it would

Beem

that the union re

vival meetings at the tent to save outside sinners at least is ahead of time. Tbe imperative duty, it would seem, is to convert, or drive out, those hypocrites whose presence in the church does so much, as Mr. Chapman said, to deter sinners from becoming christians. It occurred to me when I read Mr. Chapman's statement that he had opened up a bonanza mine of news for the daily papers. The people of this city would like to see interviews with alt tbe preachers. The evangelist said they would tell anyone who asked them that they knew they have hypocrites in their congregations. Of course, it would not be expected that the preachers would tell the names of the hypocrites, bnt no doubt some of the clergymen would give some information from which there could be made some excellent pen pictures.

A mortgage for $1,000,000 has been placed on the street railway property.

A lawyer told me a story of a divorce suit with which he had a singular connection. Fifteen years ago be was a school teacher, and had among his pupils a very sweet girl. After he had begun practicing law he was visiting in the neighborhood of the school, when he heard that his pupil was *oon to be married. He asked ber about It, and she told him that she was soon to be married to who had been a fellow pupil in the country school. "I am glad to b«ar it," said the lawyer, ''Charley is a good fellow and will make you happy." Then in a joking manner added, "If he doesn't, yon come to me and I will get yon a divorce." A week ago, which was twelve years laler, sh« entered his office and said she had cofae to get the divorce. The judge in a neighboring county granted the divorce last Monday on the ground of cruelty.

The grand jury has made a recommendation that will attract attention, not only in Terre Haute, but throughout the state. It is in the line of humane and reformatory work. The habitual drunkards who are sent to jail with great regularity area burden on the taxpayers, because their board is the chief item of profit to the sheriff. Many of them spend half their time in jail, living at the cost of the people, never paying a fine and with no prospect of reformation. Tbe suggestion is that the money which is paid in for fines be used to establish an institution to which the habitual drunkards of tbe state may be sent for intelligent treatment. Of course this opens the field for varied suggestions, but tbe main idea is thai this constant burden on tbe people" may

be removed, and at the same time some- Sunday Excursion Rates Discontinued thing done in the direction of reforma-j

lion. It Is progressive, to say nothing more, just as it was when the state began oaring for and treating insane persons as hospital patients rather than subjects for a "mad house." It is no longer the "im-ane asylum" it is the "hospital for the insane.'*

Terre Haute is to have a oivio federation, I am informed. Its first object is to be the promotion of an effort toward securing a new charter for the oity government. The idea is that with a charter, which would centralize responsibility for enforcement of the laws, something could be done in that direction. One 01 the geutlemen interested in the movement said to me that it is recognized that it would be idle to try to have the saloon laws and the laws against gambling enforced so long as the police department is controlled by men who are not amenable to the will of fche people of the city, as made known by the ballot. One of the purposes of the formation of a civic federation is the prevention of gambling during race week. I asked a clergyman about this effort. He was in doubt as to the creation of a strong enough public sentiment to permanently suppress the evils. We went over the list of the rich people in his congregation, and it is along list, and I asked how mauy of them would subscribe to a fund to be u$ed in prosecuting those gentlemen who are interested in the trotting association which sells the gambling privilege at the rac s, providing that it was understood that tbe names of tbe subscribers were to be printed in the city papers. Both of us arrived at the conclusion that no one would subscribe to anything that would be in tbe nature of an arraigument of the association. A gentleman who is interested in the civic federation said that a list was prepared of forty men who would give money to the fund, and he didn't care whether they did so secretly or not what was wanted

There is more Catarrh in this section of the countrv than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great niany years doctors pronounced it a .local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney'A Co., Toledo, Ohio, is tbe only constitutional cure on tbe market. It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a tesspoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars*for any case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address,

Dr. Chapman finished his series of revival meetiugs Thursday night, and left for his home in Albany, N. Y. He goes to Peoria next week, and after that will go to Indianapolis. The meetings have resulted in much good, and the ministers are preparing to reap the benefit of the interest created. Tbe statement of the totar number of conversions reported has not yet been made public, but it is said to be surprising. Dr. Chapman did not announce the amount of collections made during the meetings, but it is thought it was not less than $300.
