THE loss of five hundred lives and millions of dollars worth of property by the forest fires In the northwest is a calamity which is almost beyond comprehension. The horrors, that the illfated people experienced in their last hours must have been enough to make them insane before death came to their relief.

"MA NY of our Democratic contemporaries which recently denounced the tariff bill as a cheat and a fraud, and as not providing any of the promised relief to the people, are now insisting that already the "burden of taxation" is lighter. We expect to see a groat deal of thi sort of deception practiced before election day. Campaign time is not propitious for an honest analysis of a tariff measure.

THE Republicans carried Vermont by 30,000 majority, this week, again of 10,000 over the vote three years ago. Of the 242 members of the house of representatives the Republicans will have all except»nine. If this result is an indication of the trend of political sentiment the Republicans will carry the day in every northern state this year and have fifty or sixty majority in the lower branch of congress.

THERE is something that appeals to the sense of pity in the case of Byers, the Pittsburg millionaire who has finally been placed in an insane hospital. His wife and his brothers have been alternatively kidnaping the poor man during the pa"«t two years and be has been carried from one end of the country to the other, now in the bands o? detectives, then in the custody of a court here or a court there. Both the wife and brothers are more concerned in the claim to his vast possessions than they are in Che restoration of his health and ree-on.

PUBLIC PRINTER BENEDICT, no doubt by order of the president, one day this week discharged three hundred employes of the government printing office who had been appointed on the recommendation of. Senator Gorman. Of course, it was wrong for Qorman to use these three hundred public offices as a private snap, and the president will be commended by his idolaters for rebuking the senator. To be sure, there are incredulous persons who will believe that the president gratified a personal feeling, but that is pot the way to view the aots of the consecrated one.

MRS. LEASE'S eleven years eld daughter has taken up with her mother's habit of being a common scold early in life. The other day she gathered one hundred boys of the Topeka reform school under the trees and lectured them roundly. And, still more like her mother, she concluded her talk by saying that she expected to be a candidate for president some day, and she wanted the boys to promise to vote for her. The Leases and Gougars have given the genuine woman's right's cause a set back of a decade by making it appear to be a ridiculous transfer of the reins of government to feminine hands.

THE king of Corea has cast his fortnnes with Japan. The king's ministry has heretofore favored China and that gov ernment practically has had full sway in Korean affairs, which at best, have always been conducted in a corrupt manner. The Japanese envoy bad to fight hi# way into the presence of the king who was in fact a prisoner of the corrupt ministry. The king told his visitor that he would form a new ministry, though he had to cut off the heads of the members of the old one, and would henceforth rule over Corea as Japan might dictate. The latest report is that there is to bean armistice between •China and Japan and perhaps the burlesque war will be brought to an end.

IT oan't be true that the whisky people are sincere in this talk about paying under protest the fl.10 a gallon tax on whisky that was in bond when the new law went into effect. The story is that the owners will institute suit to recover the 20 cents additional tax on the ground that the government had an implied contract to accept 90 cents a gallon when the "goods" was placed in the bonded warehouse. The government, it must be remembered, is supreme and can change its laws at will. If the whisky people are entitled to any such privilege so also would be all the importers of ar tides which were on the way across the ocean, and on which the tariff duty was increased.

GBOROE M. PUIXMAN and his manager, Wiokes, were before the strike investigating commission, and by their answers to pointed questions utterly destroyed any claim they might have had upon the good opinion of fair-minded men. Mr. Pullman, it will be recalled, gave put a statement from his oottage by the sea while the strike was on in whioh he made a plausible exouse for the course of the Pullman company. He said contracts were taken at figures below cost that the men at Pullman might be kept in employment. Altogether, he was doing the philanthropic thing in giving the men work even at reduoed wages. On the witness stand he was foroed to admit that no part of the 8 per oent. dividend on the $35,000,000 watered oapital stock was sacrificed that it was business economy to keep the works in operation at a loss because there would have been entailed greater loss by closing down that the men continued to pay the exorbitant rent to the Pullman oompany out of their reduoed wages, which rent money was needed to pay the 8 per oent. dividend and, finally, that the amount of the reduction in wages exceeded the amount of the reduction in the prices received for work done, so that there w'as a net profit on the men's wages. George M. Pullman may not realise it now, but if he lives a year or two longer—most any other man would fall dead now of mortificationhe will learn that he is the most despised man in the United States.

LOVE AND MARRIAGE-

Darning is one of the best of sedatives. There is no compromise in a bankrupt marriage.

There is no feliojty exceeding that of happy married love. There are atmospheric influences under whioh we take the world's coin at its own impress and estimate.

There can be no anguish in any state of penal misery to surpass that inflicted by severe disparities in married lot

We reckon the hours made happy oy the presence of some people. Does it ever oocur to us to reckon those made happy by the absenceof some other people?

by local applications, at* they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There Is only one way to cure Deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed yon have a rumbling sound of imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely olosed Deafness is the result, and unless the infiamation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever nine cases out of ten are cansed hv catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.

We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free.

All we ask is, that in taking Hood's Sarsaparllla you will do so with perseverance equalling or approaching the tenacity with whioh your oomplalnt has olung to you. It takes time and care to eradicate old and deep-seated maladies, particularly when they have been so long hidden in the system that they have become chronic.
