I HE MAIL.
A TAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.
MAN ABOUT TOWN.
Miss Giroux, who was the "Dorothy in Sothern's Sheridan, is a daughter of the fleshy French gentleman who for neveral years was a book-keeper in this «lty, part of the time with the Chicago -A Indiana Block -Coal Co., and afterward with Pro* Brinkman.
Sotbern is partial to Terre Haute. This is a fact, no matter how true it is that actors and theatrical agents make it a ruie to say something to the same «ffect about every city for "home consumption." A few years ago when he began starring he met wfth unexpected appreciation here. It put fresh courage to his purpose to become a successful premier of the stage. It established a personal feeling of friendship for Terre Haute people though ho was unacquainted with them. So, this season he told Dickson fe Talbott that they must cut off one of the three night* at Indianapolis so that heeould make an exception.and have a "one night stand" at Terre Haute, And be insisted on using all of his stage accessories, however difficult it might be to take them from the train and back again for a one night's presentation of a play whose stage settings have received the compliment, in the large oities, of never having been surpassed in all the detail* of completeness. He wanted Terre Haute to have the best he had and he was glad to llnd that Terre Haute gave him the best audience of the season. It is a ci\se of "ma-jh" 011 both
hUIoh,
and he would be surprised, no
doubt, to learn how many persons there are in the city who would like to take him by the hand and tell hlra bow tnuoh tboy admire him, not less as a man than as an ttcter.
Mr. Ben Havens has been out of the city and the chances are ten to one that he was in Washington. Mr. John Boyd Thatcher, tho chief of the Bureau of Howards of tho World's Fair, is now located there, whore no doubt he continues tho supercilious snubbing of exhibitors and all others. Mr. Havens says that he, the Indiana commissioner, is an exception and he has hopes of getting tho diplomas, meadls, etc., lor Indiana exhibitors marked "special" atui hurriod through the red tape of the bureau. Let 110 one suppose our fellow townsman did not see about that consulate be has picked out and besure you do not run the risk of making the mis take of predicting that he will not get it He is one of those men who get places where others fail. It's a way he has generally it Is some place everyone else has overlooked. He did not overlook the opportunity to secure backing and influence while he was at the World's Fair, dally coming in contact with all the "big bugs." And, suppose he doesn't get tho consulate? Ho will got somewise. That's another way he has. There is no such word as fail la his lexicon.
The Terre Haute Trotting Association will hold a meeting next Thursday when a stook company will bo formed. There are fifty-one members of the association with shares at $250. Originally there were but ton members, but as the enterprise became more extensive in its •cope the membership was increased. It is deemed to be more business like to put the affairs of the association under the control of an incorporated company. The individual members are now each responsible for tho full amount of any claim that could be established sgainst the association. When money has been borrowed a few of the "solid men" signed the notes whereas as a stock tympany the corporation would issue the paper. The amount of tho capital stock will be $25,000.
The Normal school war is to be carried before Governor Matthews, The terms ^f Trustees Murray Briggsaud I. II. G. '•Roys© expire January 1st, and tho opponents of the Normal management are besieging the governor to appoint two members of the alumni. On the other hand the friends of the two incumbents are rallying to their support and the point is made that a failure to reappoint them would be a rebuke for their action in upholding President Parsons at the time of the June rebellion.
A well-known contractor says that the grown members of his family and their relatives have agreed to "pair oft" and give no Christmas presents one to another this year.

were opened. They were young men who represented the bankers and brokers who were bidding for the $100,000 worth of street improvement bonds, which, nnder the Barrett law, bear interest at the rate of 6 per cent, and are payable in ten annual installments, and $40,000 of ten year bonds, the proceeds of which .were to have been turned into the general fund, now about exhausted. When City Clerk Qoodwin opened and read the bids the young men's pencils flew over the pads of paper and almost Instantly they knew the net value of each bid. There were only four bids for the street improvement bonds. Two offered a premium, one of 9577 and the other of f4,900, the latter by Rudolph Kleybolt Co., of Cincinnati, which was accepted. One of the others was 1 percent discount and the fourth was par. The finance committee and the council decided to reject all bids for the $40,000 loan, not because none was good enough bat because it was said the money could be obtained for a shorter term by private qegotiation. The bidders were mad. Two of them told the council that it was not a square deal and that the city hereafter would go begging for bids on loans. They felt that they had been imposed upon by being permitted to go to the expense of coming here to bid when there was no intention of selling the bonds according to the advertisement asking them to submit bids. The best of the bids was for a rate of 4XA per .cent, interest and what could have been understood as $1,034 premium, although the figures on the bid were simply "1034," leaving the true amount in doubt. Mine Most Baur is not complaining, however, because the gentlemen were his "highly valued" guests for a couple of days.
