HOUND ABOUT TOWN.
The congregation of the First Baptist church wa« considerably surprised last Sunday morn fag when, on conclusion of the communion services Rev. Lycur gus Kirtley presented his resignation and asked to be relieved from duty on Sunday ,July 2. Some time ago it was intimated tbat trouble was brewing, and that-the resignation wa» expected, but this was denied by the members and nothing further was beard of the matter until last Sunday. Mr Kirtley has been pastor of the church here seven years, during which time, says the pastor "the home church has been improved -to the extent of $11,500 a lot has been purchased and a chapel built on Lafayette street at a cost of $3,000, half of it Is paid over |25) has been paid, on the Maple avenue mission, and a Tot has been purchased on Fourteenth street, for which $1,000 had been paid. Last year an assistant pastor was maintained, all of this at a cost of $3,700, And nothing has been done to raise the money excepting voluntary gifts. The results of the oldfashioned religion as preached by me is shown by tbo largo congregations that visit this church. During tlio seven years of my work, 471 members have b«en baptized. There is now a membership of 893, where seven years ago there was only 500. Of this number 293 have withdrawn from the church to move away. Some of them are pursuing religious work. In therseven years 01 have died. Whore seven years ago only 100attended communion services, now there are 500. The church has been thoroughly reorganized without discord. Over two thousands dollars a year has been put into improvements within the seven years. Many have been eouverted in this church and gone into other churches. No clash, no quarrels, everything has been v*tce and harmony. I have solomulz«d 17W iviArriages, attended over three hundred funerals preached 000 sermons in the seven years.

An alarm of fire turned in shortly after two o'clock this morning called the entire fire department to Frederick Goetz's furniture establishment, 637 Main street. When the men got to work
come by the smoke in the cellar. They were James Coughlin, John Fagan, Walter Bell, Oliver Hess "Brocky Anderson, Fred Davis, and Charles Pey' ton. Fortunately they were discovered in time and were all carried out un conscious. With the exception of Anderson and McClellan they all soon recovered. These two were removed to their homes. Anderson was bleeding at the nose and mouth and McClellan has been delirious. Both, however, will be all right in a day or two. McClellan has charge of the No. 2 house, and An derson belongs to the No. 3 crew. The damage to the building is very slight. The stock was injured some by the smoke, but there was no damage by the water. It is thought that some one going through the alley dropped a lighted match down the cellar window on somo combustible matter. It was a very narrow escape from a large conflagration and loss of life.
