A TAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.

On Tuesday afternoon the Supreme -court declared unconstitutional the registration requirement of the state election law on the ground that it is class legislation. ,-

On Monday morning John Bishop died very suddenly of paralysis of the heart. He was 81 years old and his gray beard and spectacles were familiar to most citfzens of this city.

This county is represented on the federal grand jury at Indianapolis by Seth Clark, John Moorhead and David Pugh, and on the federal petit jury by James Harlan Patrick W. Haggerty.

At last Main street is open to the public. The last brick was laid on Monday, the work has been received by the city, and the thoroughfare is again doing business at the old stand.

The salary of Executive Commissioner B. P. Havens, of the Indiana board of World's Fair commissioners, has been raised from $2,000 per annum and expenses to $3,500 per annum and expenses The proposition was earnestly opposed by several members of the hoard, but it went through. •••xtT

In the Superior court on Thursday an injunction was granted against the city grading and paving the alley between Sixth and Seventh and Main and Ohio streets until the benefits and damages have been assessed according to law. The restraining order does not, however, prevent the city from cleaning "that alley," between Fifth and Sixth and Main and Ohio, which has been in the condition of the Augean stables for several years. _________________

The latest scheme for the purchase of votes is to pay a stipulated sum to the voter for the cut of the party device on tho ticket whieh he votes. In cutting it from the ticket be mutilates the ballot, •causing It to be thrown out when the •count is made. The voter might fool the purchaser by cutting thedevice from -a sample ballot for the. occasion, and men who are mean enough to sell votes would do this, just as men who are so unprincipled as to purchase votes might refuse to pay for the goods after delivery.

It seems that Rev. C. R. Henderson, formerly of this city, is having trouble with tho authorities at Detroit, Mich., •whore he has been preaching since he loft Terre Haute, until recently. His offending lies in the fact that he has Ignored the marriage law of that state, which requires that the officiating •clergyman shall return to the county clork his certificate or marriage' within ten days after the ceremony. It is ohnrgod that Dr. Henderson has failed to comply with the law in many cases. The penalty Is a fine of $.100 or ninety days in jail. It Is alleged that a failure to comply with tho letter of the law rendors the marriage not strictly legal. Mr. llendorson has loft Detroit toaocept an appointment as member of the faculty of tho Chicago University, and his change of base has probably caused some one to agitate this charge. Indiana has a law similar to that of Michigan in regard to marriage returns, and an Investigation of tho marriage record shows that it lias been violated in a number of cases during the last year. The observance of -this law Is oT greater importance than Sunday closing and those who violate it should receive attention.

The McKinley demonstration in this city last Wednesday was the largest political gathering which ever assembled in this portion of the state. Early in tho morning people commenced pouring Into the city singly, in pairs, groups and delegations, and by 10 o'clock the town wa» packed. When the industrial parade started shortly after 11 o'clock tho Main street sidewalks were packed with a mass of humanity which rendered it almost impossible to move, in the day parade every township in the county was represented and the industrial portion of it was very creditable. But the grand display was reserved for the evening, when nearly 3,000 men formed in /•line and marched with torches to the •music of a scoro of bands and under the glare of every conceivable kind of tireworks. Governor McKinley did not arrive in the city until 7 o'clock. He was mot at the depot by the McKinley club, which had just been presented with a handsome silk banner by Mrs. A.J.

Crawford, and was escorted to the Terre Haute, where ho was presented-with -beautiful floral ship of while flowers, which was made by Mesdames A. J. Crawford, Robert Hay man and W. G.

Davis, assisted by the Republican ladies of the city. After he had takeu his seat on the reviewing stand" iu front of the hotel the procession moved, and it was nearly an hour in passing a given point. The McKinley club brought up the rear and escorted the governor to the big tent w'jieh had been spread for the occasion and under which he addressed more than 10,000 people.

The second division of freight train No. 47, west bound, arrived several hours late, and in' order to make way for the east bound local freight,wascompelled to pull down and on the bridge. While standing there cattle train No'. 42, east bound, also several hours late, came tearing down the grade at the rate of thirty miles an hour and crashed into the train on the bridge.

seems that no attention was paid him.

When Engineer Flynn saw that a collis-

ion was inevitable, he being unable to back his train because of another be-

hind him, ran from his locomotive and

managed to crawl down on one of the

piers, where he waa surrounded by

the wreck, but escaped injury. It ap

pears that no attempt was made to stop

the east bound train, which disregarded

the flag sent out and paid no heed to the

signal whistle of the engine on the bridge. Fireman C. P. South, of the

stock train, says that when he saw what was coming he jumped from the tender when they reached the bridge,calling on Allison to do the same, but for some reason the latter failed to do it, and rushed 011 to his death. When the locomotives came together that of the east bound train literally climbed upon the other one, both leaving the track for an instant the noise of the collision ceased, then crash went the bridge and down went the locomotives, each accompanied by three cars of its- train, those of the west bound being empties and those of the east bound loaded with cattle. For a short time the air was filled with dust, smoke and the bellowing of wounded cattle, and then all was still. Several persons saw Engineer Allison struggling in the water, and heard his shouts for assistance, but no attempt was made to save him, and he drowned. With the exception of three or four head all the cattle in the first two cars were brushed to death or drowned, the others swimming out. Another car, which hung partially off the bridge contained cattle which had to be shot. The animals belonged to Nelson, Morris fc Co., and were from St. Louis to Cleveland. One of the wrecked cars was loaded with dressed poultry for Arthur Jordan, of Indianapolis. All the other members of both train crews escaped without any serious iujury. It is quite probable the cause of the accident will never be known. The east bound train on the bridge could have been seen Jat least a mile away. It is said that heavy freight trains east bound on the I. & St. L. come down tho grade and across the bridge at a rapid rate in order to enable them to go up a grade on this side of the bridge which reaches to Fifth street, and that the cattle train was doing this. Another story atloat this morning was that the engineers and firemen of the road are overworked, and that those on the cattle train had been at work more than twenty hours on a stretch before the accident. The work of clearing the wreck is progressing rapidly, but the body of Engi ueer Allison has not been found yet when it is the coroner will doubtless try to get at the facts in the case. Allison lived at Mattoon, where he leaves a wife and a son teu years old.
