THE NEW YEAR.

In comes another new year. To-mor-row we begin writing '88 in piace of 87. How fast the mile posts spin by as we journey on the road of life! The pant is full of disappointments, of hopes unrealized, of effortK but half recorded. But on the threshold of the .New Year these should be forgotten, or remembered but.'if lessons of warning and counsel. "Do not believe the past," says Emerson, "the world is new, untied." To every human heart the future should ever be full of golden promise. Wnile life and health remain no one should despair or be discouraged. No man or woman knows when the change from failure to success i« to come. Whatever the buActings and discouragements of life have been a brave heart and good hopoare always in order. Pluck is half the battle and more than half.

This New Year will come to many a nam and woman hard pressed with family cares and troubles with unpaid bills and anxiety to know how to ppy them. I^?t them remember that steady persistence in well-doing is the best that is within the

reach

of anyone. When we

do all that we can we deserve success whether we attain it or not and such seldom fall wholly.

Considered aside from the individual, the year IHK" has been a prosperous one for this country. In the main the crops were large and bountiful, our mills and factories busy and trade generally satisfactory. The one thing awry in our national affairs has been the evil of excessive taxation which has piled up millions of surplus money in the national treasury to tho detriment of the country. With tho peoplo relloved of this unnecessary taxation and the money thrown into tho channels of trade, the country would bo even more prosperous than it is now. The revenue should liavo been roducod at previous sessions of Congress but it was not done. The present session will surely not bo alowed to pass without such action being taken.

The year 1888 will witness again tho quadronnial contest for national supremacy botween tho two great political parties of tho country. This will to Homo extent interforo with conditions of trade and business, but on the whole there sooms fair prospect of another year of substantial prosperity.

tunny .. ing very much liko General Grant's did Now it Is cancor and now It is not and from tho vcrgo of tho gravo the Prlnco comes back to the promise of life for years. Huch Is the more favorable report recently sont out by the physicians in chargo and tho court festivities, whl(-h »vero suspended at Berlin on account of tho Prince's condition, will, it is said, go on as usual. This favorable roport of tho royal throat will probably be contradicted by the next official bulletin that comos from San Remo and tho Empire will bo plunged into the deopest gloom again. If the Prlnco really had a cancerous growth In his throat, which was considered certain a few weeks ago, the chances of recovery are so slight as to amount to nothing. But after all, perhaps It Is only a wart.

TilK recent meeting of representative Republicans of Indiana, at Indianapolis, loaves no room for doubt thatOeneral Harrison Is the favorite of the party as a Presidential candidate and that the Indiana delegation will be uuamlnous Iti pressing his claims at the next national convention. This is but a just recognition of the splondld services he has rendered the party for years past. His campaign ltfst year was one of exceptional power and effectiveness and went far to augment his growing fauio as a political orator. With Harrison heading the national ticket Indiana would be certain for the Republican column.

Eugene Iliggius, whose appointment to an important place in the Treasury IVpartment has been the scandal of tbe present administration. The Maryland legislature will meet next week and the Gorman ring has arranged that Higglns shall be clerk of the House. This will not a permanent place for the Baltimore rounder, to be sure, but It will pay fairly well while it lasts and doubtless something else will be in readiness when this *hall have ended. "Gene" will not lc allowed to suffer while tlie Gorman ring can help it.

THK gre»V~Chlcag0 limes newspaper has at last been sold to a syndicate for something like a millloA dollars. It is understood that the paper will be independent in politics under the new man agemenU It remains to be se«n whether the propertv can be made to regain the powerful position it attained under its distinguished founder, Wilbur F. NA YL0JP8 OPERA HOUSE.

Gorman's minstrels had a monster audience on Monday evening and gave a splendid performance.

Evangeline on Tuesday evening was well rendered to a large and fashionable audience. The ladies of the company outstripped any previous company in this extravaganza, in some respects rivalling the Lilly Clay girls. '•The Night Owls" began a season on Thursday evening and will close tonight. The name of this party seems to have been adopted to catch the bald heads, and in this respect it is a disappointment to the b. h's, for it is nothing more than a fair variety performance with some very good specialties. The low prices of admission, fifty cents for the best seats, will doubtless draw a large audience to-night.

On Monday afternoon and evening Mr. Frank Mayo, with a strong supporting company, at the head of which is our Miss Alice Fischer, of whose artistic success all Terre Haute is proud, will appear in Mr. Mayos new play, "The Royal Guard." On Tuesday evening the play of "Nordeck" will be presented. Concerning the first the Buffalo Times says:

That most engaging and fascinating scapegrace, L' Artugnan, opened tbe dramatic seam»II at the Academy of Music last night. Before a crowded house "The Royul Onurd" was presents by Mr. Frank Aluyo and his company. The play is new version of Dumas'"Three Guardsmen," and Is a very tine conception. Kroni the hands of Mr. Mayo and John Wilson, It comes a wtroug,

Frank I. Frayne plays "Mardo" on Friday evening. The piece abounds in startling situations, tableaux, etc., and there is quite a managerieof animals introduced in the course of the play.

out, logical, intercut lug and romantic story, the atmosphere of chivalry and romance the world knows in the celebrated novel. One of the drawbacks to the old version with which the play-going public was familiar \v»w ItK Incongruities, the Hacrltlccof consistency to the dramatic points and sit nations. All of this is overcome In the new version. Not a point of dramatic interest lost, on the contrary the interest intensified, and the result a very strong romantic drama which, last night, we believe, entered upon a long career of favor and popularity. In short, a plav of the highest excellence and the most intense Interest was produced. Mr. Mayo played the part of D'Aruignan and has added to the dramatic ^gallery a new portrait hung upon the line. That Mr. Mayo stands at the head of the romantic sctors of the day was long since admitted by the general public. To say this of course Is to say that Mr. Mavo had a part of wide scope In which to display his great powers. The reckless audacity, the humorous dare-deviltry and the cool insouciance which 1h known of Dumas' great creation, the world over, was proton tea by Mr. Mayo. But the ttn» artlstlc method of the artist was that which most delighted tbe audience, If in the rush and iweep of the romance one may stop to analyze the artistic work. There was a call after every curtain, and more than once a double call, and once a third call. The play is a great success Mr. Mayo'sperformance an Intellectual triumph.
