THE JV1AIL.

A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE.

A portion of the Diana hunting and fishing club, consisting of Ed. Ross, Watson, H. Pugh, Dr. Jos. Richardson, J. T. H. Miller and James Fitzpatrick, went down the river on Wednesday for a couple of weeks. They will go as far south as Mt. Carmel.

Although from her long illness the announcement was not unexpected, the news of the death of Mrs. Thomas J. Gist, at Evansville, last Sunday morning, was learnod with sincere regret by her many friends here where she was so long a resident. The body was taken to Paris on Tuesday for interment.

Five men were found gambling in Stump's north Thirteenth street saloon, one night this week, and were arrested. Ono escaped punishment by telling on the other four, who were fined by Justice Wildy $T which, with costs, amounted to ovor 10 each. The cases against the Terre Haute club mon have gone by default, the prosecutor declining to put them on trial.

It is pretty well understood that the police board on Monday will take some action regarding the enforcement of the liquor law. Somo time back it was reported that Brinkinan contemplated offering a resolution that would cause the •saloons to bo closod at midnight. The law provides that they be closed at 11 o'clock, but it Is understood that while the order may be to close them at this hour it will moan 12 o'clock. A number ,.of saloon keepers who have lunch counters connected with their places and who do not keep opon all night, are in favor of the midnight proposition but object strenuously to tho 11 o'clock rule. Their point is that after the theater many persons dosiro a lunch and that the 11 o'olock enforcement would interfere with thoir trade. There Is not much quibbling among the advocates of the law ovor tois odd hour and the chances are

that no point will be made If the police
