PERSONAL AND PECULIAR*
President Cleveland is said to be saving throe-fifths of his salary for use when the rainy day of the proverb dawns.
It takes a pair ef quails, as nsturalists have discovered, only fifteen minutes to mate. People and geese take months.
Mark Twain is said to have received nearly $40,000 from the sale of his books in England. And yet he doesn't look a bit happy.
Phillips Brooks considers Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln and Henry Ward Beecher the three greatest Americans of the century.
Gen. Butler once got a fee of $2,000 for telling a man to shut his mouth and keep still. The advice was worth the however, as the client followed it and made |50,000.
A man in Burlington, Vt., kissed strange woman at the depot in place of his sister, and she made him pay 926 to settle the case. They are always ready to take unfair advantages of a man.
One hundred and eighty million dollars' worth of five-cent cigars were smoked in this country last year, principally by laboring men. There is not even a pinch of ashes left to show for this immense sum of money. .-
A man entered a drug store in New York the other day and rang the telephone bell and wanted to call up the Mikado of Japan. He was called crazy and put under arrest. Ten years hence it will be seenthathe was only ahead of his date.
A man at Henderson, Ky., has forgiven his wife four different times for running off with other men and being gone from a week to a month, but his patience is exhausted. She has gone again, and he has taken the advice of his neighbors and applied for a divorce.
In a talk to New York alumni, President Adams, of Ithaca, said: "I do not want that Cornell University should become the university of the rich man, where the student can give one-third of his time to his neckties, a third to his pony and the other third to his girl."
The city election is only a little more than two .weeks away, and yet there is less interest displayed in it than in the selection of a nice spring hat from the elegair styles displayed by S. Loeb, the popular hatter, on the corner of Main and Fifth streets. As you pass that way look in his oorner witadow. If you don't ^06 what you want, step inside and you will certainly be suited. In buying a hat there you are sure of getting the very latest style.
The Great Doris & Oolvln's Shows. From the Boston Globe. "John B. Doris A E. D. Colvin's Circus, Menagerie, Museum, Hippodrome, and New Wild. West had a full attendance last night at Chelsea. Miss Stokes, whose wonderful riding has been the chief topip ip Boston society, rode, and rode in a.planner which proclaimed her, indeed, a rider graceful, fearless and beautiful Mr. Wm. Dutton, who 1m known the world over as the champion bareback rider, performed in away never before seen by a Boston audience. Every department of the Circus and Menagerie is conducted on first-class principles. As a circus it is certainly a success, and in fact exceeded our expectations. This is especially true of tne great Roman Hippodrome, in the various races ran. both anoient and modern, classio and popular. In the great Wild West exhi bition all the scenes from life and thrilling hair-raising acts presented by other managers were given, and added .to with fully fifty more."
The big show will exhibit at Terre Haute on Monday, April 25, at 17th and Main street, and will, we are sure, have a full attendance. Its record Is the best and the names of its artists, whloh will be seen in our advertising columns, speak for themselves.
