YOUR VISITORS.

RULES FOR ENTERTAINING THEM.

Don't invite them if you don't want them. Don't rein into debt to entertain them in style.

Don't turn your bouse upside down for them. j'/ Dou't wear your Sunday dress when you're cooking their dinner.

Don't show them off too publielyif tbey happen to be distinguished individuals, aud don't hide them if they're poor relatives.

Don't expect your hired girl to keep her temper if she has eight or ten additional people to work for without any additional help.

Don't bake and broil and roast yourself to death for them, so that you'll have to go to bed with a sick headache and send for the doctor, leaving your company to the painful reflection that they were the cause of it all.

Don't try too bard to show off what an expert housekeeper you are. Better let things slide a little for a week while you have strangers and take time to talk to them. Tbey came to see you, not to take lessons in housekeeping.

Don't putonairs and pretend that you live all tbe year round on tbe exquisite dishes you prepare for them. Some precocious youngster in the house might let tbe cat out of the bag and invite them to stay always for the sake of having good things to eat.

Don't let them see that your business is neglected, your house turned inside out and your time wasted because tbey happen to be with you. If you care to keep them, make them for the time being members of the household, and let everything go on in a quiet home-like way.

Don't whip your children while there's company in the house, not oven if they insist on putting their fingers in the sugar-bowl and on telling the most uncomfortable seercts. If you haven't managed to bring your children within the bounds of civilization, let them stay out of it till your visitors have gone, and then square accounts with them as you see fit.

Don't talk your visitors to death. Give them plenty of books to_^ readjta quiet room to go to,and leave them to do as they like generally. This is the secret of entertaining people well, and is very different from propping them up in a chair in the best room, like a prisoner in a jury-box, to be pumped and crossquestioned from morniug till night about every bit of their personal affairs

THE Canadian Methodist church has recently stricken the word "obey".from the wife's pledge in the marriage ritual. The words "serve" and "obey" were omitted from the woman's vow in the marriage service of the Methodist Episcopal church in the United States in 18(54. Tbe question "Who giveth this woman, is also omitted as degrading to hor sex, implying that a woman is always some man's property till she becomes the property of sume other man. The man's promise, "With all my worldly goods I thee endow," might well be left out where the woman is rich and be is not worth a button and in debt for his wedding outfit.
